Hello for the first time ...

I'm looking at vMix to make the transition from conventional hardware - vision mixer, character generator, tape slo-mo - to this kind of "in-the-box" solution.

However, my broadcast background screams "back-up" when it comes to recording, so in addition to the inbuilt hard-disk record capability, I want to record to an external recorder as well.

Only working in SD at present, ideally I would like to use my existing Firestore recorders for that purpose, but I understand the decision not to spend time on firewire as an output option.

My only current output device is a venerable Matrox RT.X100, but vMix doesn't "see" that (as an output device, although it happily works as a capture device). I don't want to go down the HDMI or SDI path yet, so the favored devices from Blackagicesign aren't on my shopping list as that would involve two stages of conversion to get the signal into the Firestore and more connections means more points of failure.

So, is it possible that there is an easy solution for my existing Matrox card, given that they have just come to the vMix party; is there another analogue/firewire solution around; or is Mini Monitor and a few other bits of conversion the only way to go right now?

Thanks to anyone who has some insights.

I must admit that a nice feature would be to be able to record on 2 drives simultaneously.
That would be nearly the same as an external recorder.
For those in the audio field, Cockos Reaper allows you to do this: you can enable a primary AND secondary record path together. Cool !

You can record two at ounce. With either flash media encoder or VLC at higher bit rates along with the internal recorder.
for FME just disable stream and point recordr to external drive. Likewise with VLC. VLC would allow the recording in better selection of formats.
Just omes down to what works best for you.

Thanks for the thoughts.

For anyone who may be interested in my resolution (workaround):

- picked up an ATI Radeon X1600XT with DVI and S-video out (for five bucks on eBay!)
- set the TV-out (as the second output on the card) to 720 x 576 @ 50Hz
- run S-video to a Canopus ADVC-100 video converter
- take firewire out of ADVC-100 to Firestore FS-100 recorder
- and the video and S-video loop outputs of the ADVC-100 give me a feed to a second PC for streaming plus monitoring

As I'm running SD widescreen 16:9 PAL, the only small downside is that the vMix main page has to be run in standard rather than widescreen which gives me a "squeezed" image, but that's not a big deal as I have external monitoring as well.

Yes, it's a bit of a kludge, but it looks like a winner!

Just an update ...

Now running a Nvidia GeForce GTS240 1GB card with its HDMI out connected to an A/V converter to give me the SD video signal I need.

Widescreen SD pictures from Panasonic AJ-D200 cameras look good recorded on Firestore in 720x576.

First major test in a few weeks' time with the set-up being used to record hosting, music and comedy segments for a variety entertainment series commencing broadcast in May for 13 weeks.

Wish us luck!!

If you now have HDMI, you could use an AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable to record HD onto an SDHC card and use the passthrough feature on the device to still connect to your a/v converter if you need the SD signal. I've been using an LGP for a few months and it has worked quite well.

I've checked with AverMedia and, unfortunately, it doesn't record 25 or 50p in PC Free Mode so no use in a 50Hz country.
