So, the CPU/GPU impact on the PC would be the same using NDI camera resources as using local camera resources*? - Tom * - cameras physically connected to the PC running vMix 17 through a capture card or other physical device.

admin wrote:Some answers to some common questions below:
Is it GPU or CPU based? NDI encoding/decoding is CPU based using around 5% per 1080p30 camera on a modern i7 CPU.
What color spaces are supported? Frames are sent/received from NDI at 4:2:2 8 bit, but NDI compresses at 16 bit internally. NDI also has full support for alpha, sent as a separate channel. (so 4:2:2:4)
Will there be converter boxes? More than likely, possibly from more than one manufacturer. We are working on our own prototypes using off the shelf SFF (small form factor) PCs, but the codec can theoretically be used on devices as small as a standard HDMI to SDI mini converter.
The main advantage of one of these converters is you will no longer need a capture card opening up most laptops to multi camera productions without the need for thunderbolt!
My hope is the converters will be affordable.
What is the stream bitrate?
To my knowledge it is variable bit rate. I've seen around 50Mbps to 100Mbps per camera in my tests so far.
Will there be iOS and Android support?
Support for these devices, specifically the ARM processor is being worked on at NewTek. Not sure if they will release software for these devices, but then NDI is open so if you are a developer sign up for the SDK and start building your own!
Will Desktop Capture use NDI?
Yes, we plan to completely replace vMix Desktop Capture to use NDI. NewTek will also release an app that does much the same thing.
What vMix licenses will we need? One vMix license per PC that is running vMix at the same time. If you use a 3rd party NDI app on a second PC or vMix Desktop Capture, you won't need the second license.
Do I need two copies of vMix to use capture cards from multiple PCs?
No. One of the cool things NewTek is working on is a universal PC app that can convert any capture cards in the PC it is running from into NDI.
So you could have a vMix laptop in your studio and a rackmount PC with all the capture gear locked away!
Excellent work Martin, I can hardly wait this is going to be revolutionary.

Any idea if NDI will support 10 gigabit networks?

it does not matter.... it´s all networks 100, 1000, 10k.... the more band you have , the more NDI streams you can have at the same time....
Cheers,

Hi
We are back from our trip to ISE in Amsterdam and we did a little research regarding NDI. First of all we visited NEWTEK and they gave us a little insight of this new (and to my personal view groundbreaking) technology. We all here as vMix users can be very happy that Martin has implemented NDI to new vMix17. The demo at NEWTEK booth was very impressive, they showed interaction between different tricaster products on NDI basis. You can use all inputs and outputs within the same network no matter where the source is plugged in. And they showed in a split-screen that latency is very very low (you can hardly see any difference). Of course they only had to bridge a few metres in their booth but they promised that the latency behaviour does not change even when using longer distances in a network. Sounds very promising.
Unfortunately we were not able to find any hardware stuff like converters (HDMI / SDI to NDI) but this is not a big surprise. The NDI standard was launched in the end of 2015 and of course it takes some time to develop appropriate hardware. Maybe at NAB we will see some devices.
All capture card manufacturers we visited (Matrox, Blackmagic, Datapath, Yuan, AJA) are familiar with NDI and most of them told us that the engineers are working on integration of NDI standard. Only at Magewell booth they did not know what we were talking about but they promised to push their engineers, too. I believe that the engineers already know, the girls at the trade shows are just responsible for sales and not for technical questions.
NEWTEK also told us that most camera manufacturers (Canon, Sony, Panasonic) are in close contact with them to integrate NDI directly to their products.
As a summary we can say that NDI is on its way to the market. It will take a while until we have supporting products and devices but once they are available I believe it can change the market. Just my personal view (and hope).
Regards Karsten

Thank you Karsten for the update, and that you express the interest from us vMix users to Newtek and important h/w manufacturers.

A few more NDI questions...
Any idea on how much CPU usage desktop capture via NDI will take? I typically ingest 4 laptops for corporate meetings via HDMI capture?
Will we be able to iso record any NDI inputs via Multicorder?
Will NDI processing happen only on the cpu or are there plans for GPU processing?
Thanks!

NDI is a Newtek product so some of your questions should be directed to them. However, % CPU use will depend on your system. In my testing it has been as little as 1-2% and up to 10% depending on the NDI source and the system you are ingesting it on. In terms of vMix, as Martin has explained a number of times the NDI source is treated as any other input source so vMix will use both GPU and CPU as normal.

It's recommended / requiered to have 1gbps Local Area Network to use multiple NDI sources.
Maybe it was on Tom's Streaming Idiots show or somewhere else, that you need to add a 1gbps switch to your network, connect all the devices You want and you got it.
My question is: switch or router?
It's obvious that it's necessary to have a router in our LAN. BUT, does it need to be a 1gbps one? Or could it be (our old) 100 mbps router connected to 1gbps switch, then all of the devices connected to the switch and the speed will be the same as with 1 gbps router only? (or 1 gbps router + 1 gbps switcher)?

The answer is switch. They ensure that each port is allocated a full 1 gig rather than sharing the bandwidth across all ports which is what the older devices did. Also you want a full duplex switch. The good news is that in most routers, these full duplex switches are built in. So if you only need 4 ports, your ADSL/Cable/Fibre modem/Router should be fine.

Any chance someone could make an HDMI - NDI converter out of a Rasberry Pi or something similar?

I don't think you'll see a HDMI to NDI converter based on Raspberry Pi, but a NDI to HDMI is not unthinkable. The problem is that the Raspberry Pi doesn't have any video capture capabilities.

If this is what it appears to be, this will change the pace of upcoming HDMI - NDI converters.
I have a post on the Newtek forum asking if NDI code is available for arm devices, I was thinking of NDI into a pi or odroid and HDMI out, but with this card it looks like it can operate in the opposite direction as well. HDMI in NDI network out. Just don't know if Newtek have a version for arm.

A. Ah just read up more on this, its not what I thought it was.. Thought it was a HDMI input card to replace the pi camera input.. Looks like this card is a HDMI to HDMI bridge.. HDMI into the card passes its video to the HDMI output of another pi on the same network.. Whilst still an interesting idea, really little more at this time than a HDMI over cat5 adapter.. A.

Hi, there are some USB adapters for PC laptops or desktops that can handle HDMI or SDI inputs up to 1080p and can be used as a source for VLC Player. Then you can install Newtek NDI Tools (free download) in the same computer and using the free Newtek NDI VLC plugin you can display the HDMI or SDI input signal and make it available as NDI source for VMix or any other NDI capable switcher application. In the USA you can get the USB adapters from here: https://store.techexport...ollections/e-mediavision . Feel free to ask if anyone need further information. Thanks.
