Personally, I use an external recorder (Atamos Ninja) to record a High Res backup recording and I use that to monitor the final output of Audio and Video.

Set an audio output for the master audio bus in the settings and connect headphones or speakers to it?

Start by checking the vMix Audio Output settings to make sure that both the Master Output and Headphones are not going to the same device (eg. Default Windows Playback Device), or else turning down the master fader may still result in the same audio going to the output, via the Headphone level control. In other words, (a) don't send both logical outputs to the same physical audio device, and (b) make sure the device that's taking the Master audio is the one that you're actually listening to - and then is should work :)
