I used to take the same input (single machine being captured) about 4 times then it got laggy/less reliable. It ran ok with 6 before it started saying "error", but with 4 it was still fast.

Now I just create a virtual input from the master input :) This was before I discovered create virtual input.

As for how many can be taken in from different computers well I'm not sure, but I take 8+ FULLHD cameras in no problems, so can't see why it would be harder than that for the computer.

So to guess I'd say 10+ would be a non-issue. How many do you have in mind?

I think it depends, to a certain extent, on the capacity of your system and/or video card.
I've never really tested it, and don't use it that often but I seem to run into issues if I try to add more than 2 instances from the same computer.
