I've been hearing a lot of folks say that quicktime sucks a lot of CPU but what's an alternative? I want to use a format that allows alpha channels and audio

(normally I use the animation codec inside of aftereffects for QT files)

@ iansama

It typically doesn't, BUT...
You can add an audio file to the folder and rename it to match the first image in the sequence and you should be good to go when loaded into vMix.
Some of the details are discussed here:
https://forums.vmix.com/...aspx?g=posts&t=10632

Hope that helps.

We use the NewTek codecs here now, they support alpha and audio. Much smaller files that QT animation also.

Steve can you expand on that. Many tools on that page :) Is there a download to an Newtek video file format? I didn't see it. Or are you saying you use the Adobe plugin and send stuff real time from After Effects or Premier?

Installing NDI Tools on a PC will install the NewTek SpeedHQ codec. This codec supports alpha channel by choosing selection that has four digits of color space (like SpeedHQ 4:2:2:4 or 4:2:0:4).

There is also a OSX version of SpeedHQ that can be downloaded from http://new.tk/dl
The codecs are available on the bottom of the page.

Hi Steve,

I've been trying to use the newtek codecs with alpha channel, without success. I'm exporting the videos selecting the alpha option on Adobe After effects, but when I add them into VMIX the alpha doesnt work. I even tryied to tick the "this video contains alpha channel", while adding it.

It's possible that I'm missing something while exporting or importing, can you give me some more information so I get it to work?

I'm currently having huge performance issues by using multiple .mov animations into my production.

Thank you.

Can you Export a PNG file of one of the frames and verify that it has alpha?
There are several Adobe setting that can affect this.

I just used After Effects 2017 and rendered out a QuickTime in the SpeedHQ 4:2:2:4 codec and loaded into my IP Series system (I don't have a vMix). Alpha channel was there. Must be a setting somewhere.

Kane,

Vmix didn't recognice the file format, and I do have NDI Tools installed, I can even record with newtek codec.

VLC reports the codec is "SHQ3".

Am I doing something wrong?

thanks,
Felipe

I can't say. It works on my TriCaster and with After Effects without having to do anything special. I don't use vMix (just here to help with NDI questions). Perhaps someone else here knows if there is a step you are missing.

@ kane

Same issue here...
None of my players are able to play your file (vMix, VLC, Quicktime, WindowsMediaPlayer)

vMix Error: Could not find elementary streams

EDIT: Also, the NewTek codecs in vMix are contained in AVI not MOV.

It opens in QT on my test machine quite happily but I get the same error as Ice when trying to open in vMix. have sent the error log to vMix support.

Also works fine in Vegas.

Ice

- Current VLC Player doesn't support SpeedHQ, unless you are using VLC v3 betas.
- Apple's QuickTime Player will play the files at long as the NewTek codecs are installed (use QuickTime 7 on OSX systems).
- Windows MediaPlayer will not play any QuickTime codec beyond H.264.
- I have no idea about vMix.

The SpeedHQ codec is supported in both AVI and QuickTime files.

Here is a SpeedHQ .avi that I made in BluffTitler quickly.

SHQ .AVI video

It works perfect in vMix here.
