I am abandoning my MAC because I am moving to vMIX. So, this is question is from a good computer guy who hasn't owned a PC for 15 years.

I want to build the most serious machine I could practically build using the X299 motherboard. The sole purpose of this machine is to run a HD call in 3 camera talk show using as many call in interviewees as the computer(s) will comfortably support. It will do nothing else.

Intel is about to release a bunch of very fast multi core processors which work with this.

My question: How fast do I go without any benefit? How far up the multi-core food chain???

The difference between the fanciest (about 2,000 USD) and the least fancy (about 500 USD) is not enough to influence this decision. I want to get the best for the next 2-3 years.

I have been researching this a lot over the last two weeks and I am sure that I don't know near enough to even make a decision till I hear from Martin, Tom and the rest of the geniuses here. Here is what I see in a nutshell.

1. The "old" architecture Ruby system works well, sort of....but, it is about to become a dependable old system.
2. The new X299 architecture is neat on paper but the motherboards are not working well with the chips right now; and, nobody but nobody can make a prediction as to how and when it will be right for vMix until it is tried and tested.

So, Martin, please test it out and let us know what works and what doesn't. I suspect you can't even get the parts til the middle of next month; but, it sure would be great to hear from you. You have one customer who has made the decision to go with vMix who is stranded in this pool of uncertainty (I should write screen plays after that!).

You are so kind. Thank you. As God sometimes works things out, I do have a classic Mac Pro which, like the other computers ended up sitting in 3 inches of water from the last tropical storm in Belize. It is now a beautiful side table and I am wondering if it can be used as a BarBQue (which I do not know how to spell!).

It is much more sensible to wait till this X299 things gets settled up and go with a solid computer based on the Ruby build and then go for all the gusto once we know from the experts what to do. Who knows, maybe Ruby (the name for my new computer) will be able to handle all I throw at her.

It seems like the CPU is much less important than the GPU with vMix. Sounds like a Z270 motherboard is the way to go now ....and, Holy Cow, I can actually get those parts in Belize.

I bet there will be preliminary news on today's fun time live show. I will be there with baited breath.

We'll be using the x299 system in the show next week to test out 4K streaming with it. It will be a good test to see what it's capable of.

I'm here to report x299 + 7900x improved 150% performance over 7700k. (over 100 inputs in vmix), and sucefully passed the stress test.

Anyone with the need for brute power or PCIe lanes, go for it.

No worries, that's what community is made for :) Someone had to try it at some point.. haha.

EVGA GTX 1070 (tested with many others, no difference) + ASROCK X299 TAICHI.

Chose this motherboard for the dual lan and PCI-E slots amount. Never had vmix issues with different motherboard manufacturers, I stick with the recommended chipset tho.

We had a server assembler put together an i9 proposal for Sienna Cloud for NDI. This is CPU heavy so we specified the i9 CPU in X299.
The Design they put together was intended to be a rack mount, quiet, powerful CPU for NDI Cloud operations.

You will note that the GPU in the design is light, because GPU isn't required for Cloud for NDI - but you can easily put in a more powerful graphics card.

I was quite surprised how affordable it was. Its ideal for any heavy duty NDI operations, and will be perfect as a scalable engine for our new NDI Smart Processing Router

Just passing this info on in response to the question. I haven't actually seen one of these machines - it was a design and budgeting exercise, but the supplier assures me this is a good design, and its the only rack mount X299 I could find.
