Yes. You can see that in what Martin has demoed in the LiveShow.... So any vMix install becomes a feed for any other vMix install, and any NDI input on the network can be ingested into either instances of vMix.

NewTek will make the code available for 3rd parties to develop other capability.

We use 8 channels+ in our facility now and it has kept vMix out of the loop for some of our uses. This could be VERY useful for us.

We use Dante to route audio also, and having 16 channels would be fantastic !!!

Steve, from what I can see in the NDI code, it will work alongside, or perhaps replace Dante. NDI gives you the ability to select to send audio, or video, or audio and video to the NDI receiver.

Great stuff!

Is NDI only restricted to 1080i? If not, what are the bitrates for 4K and 1080p50 signals?

True true, but I was thinking more in the line of a stand alone software that does not need vmix to run. It`s sole purpose would be monitoring.
However, since NewTek I making the code available I should think that it's only matter of time before e.g. the team behind OBS adds NDI capabilities to the software.
Then one could use it for namned purpose.

I imagine it's only a matter of time before there are open source NDI viewers or the protocol is integrated into VLC.

So you can do Audio only? Thats cool. Our audio consoles have built in Dante though.

but what about getting my 16 channels in and out of vMix ? :-)

@ Zetor1980

Although that may be an eventuallity (in a perfect world), however, I don't think it is anywhere close to that yet.

Thank You Ice, so I thought, but one guy from NewTek, on YT spot, told like " You can use any camera signal from one place and use it on another side in the world". He has so long ethernet cable ? ;)

Has anyone seen anything about distance limitations with NDI?

Is there a standard for gigabit networks?

Thinking of the future and events we do . . . we can have runs up to 600 feet for some of our cameras. Wondering if there will be issues with NDI . . .

How do we transition from one NDI camera to another NDI camera in vMix? Is it only possible by 'right'-clicking the input and then selecting the other camera or can we fade from one to the other as with any other input combination.

I never saw in the video with Martin and Tim, I never saw them transition form one NDI device to another NDI device.

Thanks

The right-click feature is just a way to save some screen real estate for all of your NDI sources. Each NDI source can be added like any other input. So if you have 4 NDI inputs you could have 4 windows for them. Then you just select them as you would a normal input and transition between them.

Zetor1980

These long-distance connections will probably be handled by some type of cloud configuration or centralized hub.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Richard Friedel, EVP-general manager of Fox Networks, who discussed a five-year implementation process for 20/20 Vision, a live IP implementation for Fox.

During the “Media Factory of the Future” session, Friedel said his operation is three years into its implementation and already has racked up successes.

“We just finished the Women’s World Cup in Canada. It’s a big broadcast for us. We did all of that with remote editing using the Adobe Cloud.

“We are editing at our base in Vancouver, Canada, as well as our plant in Los Angeles. We were able to just seamlessly have people edit and share content as if they were next door,” he said, adding that the IP-based deployment has produced “huge advantages for us operationally.”

Whatever Ethernet supports now and in the future will work with NDI.
At the moment Gigabit is a distance of 100m (~300 feet) over CAT6

That can be extended near infinitely with either fibre converters or using $20 gigabit switches a repeaters.

By using a mass market medium like ethernet, suddenly all the expensive routing equipment one would use for SDI either becomes unnecessary
or expensive by comparison.

Compare a 32 port gigabit switch to a 32 port SDI router to see what what the potential is here!

One interesting use case will be our booth at NAB, we are looking at needing something like 1000ft of SDI cable to wire everything up
vs 80ft for the network cables needed to route the same number of cameras.
(We will be demoing both side by side!)

No reason to think Replay will not work. Of course, you'll need to upgrade to vMix 17.

No reason to think it will work with previous versions. No version of vMix before vMix 17 was NDI-compliant.

But, heck, the vMix 16 upgrade was only $60. One would imagine that the vMix 17 upgrade would be similar.
