I trird recording files using the recommended TS extension for editing.
When I try to import, PP 5.0 returns File format not supported.

Using on the same PC it was recorded on.

Premiere Pro CS5 does not like .ts files.
Rename the file and change the extension to .mpg and it should work fine.
This was discussed earlier, but I take it you already knew that...

Perhaps this is a new development in vMix 15, I do not know.
I have refrained from recording to anything but .avi of late just to avoid any hiccups with PP.

I couldn't find that old thread, I thought that I had written about it before.

avi sure does eat up a ton of storage space, but you're right its probably the best option.
