I've just seen the IBC video showing vMix 28 features and was excited for the flatten layers feature, which I've been begging for for years!

However I just wanted to confirm that the flattened layer will be available as a layer on *other* inputs in the project, as a flat layer available to crop, zoom, etc the whole image?

(Currently the only way to do this is to put it through an Output or a Mix)

This is the most exciting thing for me in v28! THANKYOU!

It's simply a convenience feature, as it still uses a special hidden Mix input behind the scenes.

So you can see how it would work by simply using the existing Mix input workflow available now.

So does it use a Mix input per flattened layer still?

More specifically, does flattening cut into the limit of 15 Mix inputs? Or impact Mix numbers used in shortcuts or scripting?

The hidden mix input is used instead of the source input when selecting the source as a layer of another input.
It does not count towards the normal Mix input total.
