Hello, all
Our livestream sounds great but people have complained that they have to turn their tv or device all the way up in order to hear. Vmix shows levels in yellow, some red here and there but not often. If I push anything up a little in vmix or the soundboard or the audio interface, it distorts the sound. We run from the soundboard to an audient id14 in vmix. I’ve tried backing off the levels of the audio in vmix (which have by default always been at the max) while pushing up the soundboard output to the interface. I’ve also tried raising the main level (when you click the gear on the audio input) but starts distorting. This setting has always been at zero. Seems I’m right at a threshold but need it to where users don’t have to turn their device all the way up. Anything I’m missing? Thanks.

How are you monitoring the audio your vMix stream, from the soundboard, audio interface or vMix computer?
Do you have your vMix computer as an input to your soundboard?
Is your iD14 connected via USB to the vMix computer or with an analog cable?
How is the soundboard connected to the iD14? Analog? USB?
Phantom power turned off on Audient iD14?

Seems when the video gets up on YouTube etc the day after the livestream it is better. I’m guessing they process it to have better audio levels?
I have noticed the same though and have to turn up the device or tv all the way up. I don’t have a great way to monitor during livestream other than YouTube or fb through my phone to my Bluetooth hearing aids.
The id14 is connected via usb. We run out of the soundboard through one of its outputs. I need to double check to make sure phantom power is off.
I plan on trying the waves ultra maximizer to see if it’ll help. I also have to adjust volumes quite a bit while the stream is going so maybe this will help raise my overall volume and make it consistent. Hopefully?

More processing is usually not the most desirable way to fix audio problems when the source audio is good.

What is brand/model of your soundboard? Not sure. I’ll check. It’s pretty old school.
Correct me please, your sound chain is:
- Soundboard Output to Audient iD14 using analog cables
- Audient iD14 to vMix computer using USB interface
Correct.
Are you running the Audient software on the vMix computer? Yes I am.
What does the audio sound like when you monitor with headphones out of the iD14? Sounds great with headphones out of the audient but I do have to turn the headphone level all the way up.
I’ve confirmed phantom power is off.

Not likely, but make sure you're not in a line level to mic level situation. Looks like your Audient expects 1/4" connectors for line level.

Babbit,
I think you are on to the same thing I was thinking with the line/mic levels. I used to have announcers that would always switch the mixer outputs to the wrong level. Once I had to drive 70+ miles just to flip a switch in the back of a mixer in the wrong mode.

What are you streaming it too, we found that we had a similar issue streaming our weekly football (soccer) game when using vimeo, we found dropping the bit rate helped our viewers.

Not sure I understand the line level to mic level reference.
I do use a 1/4 cable from the soundboard output to the audient.

I think you all are right. In livestream tonight in the audient software, I see my input is hot but shows as mic1.
Edit: never mind. Looks like there is no way to differentiate between line and mic on the audient. Will show just either mic, optical, or DAW. But it still comes in hot here and I can’t seem to adjust it anywhere.

Ultimately I wound up using a -40 dB pad, which is indicative of line level audio into a mic level input. Previous engineers tried -20 dB, which covers pro line level to consumer, and it was still distorted unless set to some ungodly quiet level. Quiet and field IFB don't exactly mix. You can get inline XLR pads for relatively cheap, some with selectable pad values. Or if you like soldering and have resistors handy, make your own.
