1080p possible on vCall?

I'm testing with the full trial version of vMix, and so far pretty impressed with what's possible. I'm the multimedia producer for a trade publication and with lockdown in full effect, we are switching to fully remote video interview productions. We've been using zoom but the quality is abominable. So far, under various scenarios, I've maxed out vCall inputs at 720p, and despite the end user having a full 1080p camera, and solid bandwidth, I cannot get that full resolution feed into vMix.
The master project setting is 1080, and my own webcam will record at 1080.
My setup: Two external calls. Multicorder set to record both calls and the master output. Master project set to 1080, 30p. Both inputs are set to 1080, 30p. The Output file is recorded at full 1080, but it's obvious the two external calls are being uprezzed from 720p. The individual files for the calls are being recorded at 720p.
Intel i7 chip Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU w/8gb memory 512gb SSD harddrive
Any advice would be appreciated!

In the documentation it states the max resolution for vCalls is 720p.
I agree not having 1080p as an option for those with bandwidth who can handle it is pretty terrible in 2020. vMix needs to add this ASAP in light of the reasons you mention.
Wirecast has a similar feature to Vcall that is also stuck at 720p max. I am sure they’ll add 1080p support soon. When it does I am going to have to switch platforms.

Ah, okay then. I looked all over the documentation and never found that.
I'll email them directly and beg to have it added as an option.
Thanks for the quick reply, very helpful.
I've no experience with Wirecast - any experience with it? Good or bad?

Wirecast
Good:
A Mac and Windows version. A MUCH nicer UI and layout and feels more professional. vMix feels like Visual Basic project. In fact I would love vMix to hire a progressive UI designer
Not as good: Not as powerful or flexible as vMix No dedicated audio mixer

I don't care if it looks like a UHaul truck if it does a better job than a Ferrari :-)

I don't care if it looks like a UHaul truck if it does a better job than a Ferrari :-) Agreed. I just wish at this price that the UI had a least a little sizzle. Doing some tasks requires a lot of clicks. The UI is little more than a collection of Visual Basic forms.

Please leave vMix UI as is. I was a long time wirecast user since version 4. So maybe 10 years or so. I have been in the exclusive Beta Tester Group of Wirecast, worked with other Telestream products.... And there is a reason I'm now a vMix enthusiast. I just say one word. STABILITY.
I lost paying clients due to wirecast UI freezes. They'll catch some fish with their UI, no doubt.
The things I love in vMix - stability - development cycles. So fast. Impressive. Thanks Martin, Tim and the entire team. Complaining is easy. But keeping the software at this level over time is a really hard job. Congrats vMix. You ROCK. - remote control capabilities - support - price
Honestly, go to telestream and really use wirecast on a daily basis or road show stress. Good luck. Just try to reopen a saved session. Hahaha. I bet 100$ you will return to vMix. No one can teach you the experience or practice. You have to fall on your own knees.

I agree on stability. I have not used it for many gigs...but it's great to hear from someone with a lot of exprience with Wirecast.
I will say this: I downloaded a demo of vMix and was able to figure 90% of it out and get a pretty fancy show going. Now I am a computer and broadcast nerd, so I know my around A/V and apps...but I am impressed.
Let's get 1080p working on vCall now :)

For 1080 you need vmix on both ends. Then you can do 1080. There are alternatives. Larix broadcaster over SRT, Medialooks VT, NDI cloud,...

Having vMix at both ends is not a good (or economical) solution for guests. You need to make it one or two clicks at the most. vCall does that but only in 720.

Most guests could use the trial version.
The biggest hurdle would probably the specs for it to run properly and the skills needed to set it up. But I imagine Remote Desktop would help.

I would argue a bigger hurdle is having to tell a guest you may only interview once, why the needs to install a rather heavy application to be on a call. vMix install a bunch of other apps and shortcuts to a users machine. Not optimal. The vCall solution is pretty much perfect for casual guests. They just need to have the option to increase the quality of the remote call.

We have successfully changed the vMix call UI using a NGINX server and sub filter.
If there is a will there is a way.
+1 for 1080p if bandwidth is available.
vMix is the best, no question.

VMix Call can do 1080p60 via Chrome, which did surprise me. Whether it does it seems to be inconsistent, and not sure of the determining factors because it doesn't seem to be bandwidth or necessarily compute power.
Example: On my home setup I have Sony a6400 with an El Gato Camlinkon a PC with Gigabit fiber internet, and VMix call will go as high as 1080p. Put it on my powerful Mac on the same internet, and it never goes above 720p.
Yet, someone else in another location uses the same Mac specs on the same internet provider with the same camera and capture device will deliver 1080p60.
The steps above 720p in VMIX call seem to be 1440x810 the 1920x1080.

Interesting
Is there a way to tell on the caller side what resolution you are sending ?

Bear in mind that WebRTC is supposed to be adaptive and a lot is done by the browser automatically. It's much more aggressive about reducing resolution that going the other direction. This is why it's virtually impossible to do 4K in a browser based connection, even though the code supports it. The bandwidth management mechanism doesn't deal well with the bit rates involved over real-world connections.

Any one of you interested on a walkaround to have higher resolutions on vmix call, I've found a way you can achieve it, of course is a hacky way. and it require a bit of experience, only works with Chrome browser. Basically you can enable chrome override to set a higher resolution on the video constrain and it will work. vMixCall.prototype.getConstraints = function () { var t = this; constraints = { audio: true, video: { width: 1280, height: 720 } } if (navigator.userAgent.match(/Android/i)) { constraints = { audio: true, video: { width: 640, height: 360 } } t.mobile = true; } t.configureVideoConstraints(constraints); t.configureAudioConstraints(constraints); t.trace(JSON.stringify(constraints)); return constraints; } vmixcall 4k.jpg (65kb) downloaded 1 time(s).

You can get 1080 using Firefox with a camera/hdmi capture device that tries to force 1080. Like a DSLR into an ATEM. Doesn't work with webcams.
