Thank you for your help, and patience Bardos 59, I feel like I'm being really stupid here.
What I can't get my stupid head around is - if, as you say, the CPU is the bottleneck, and there is plenty of bandwidth from the cards and USB ports, how will copying to a hard drive improve things?
