Play your videos until a meaningful part and pause them
Use the "restart with transition" feature

That works somewhat, but is just a lame workaround. This is an easy fix and I agree it should have been done already.

merely pointing out that unless one has multiple custom thumbnails, that based on part of the footage that it also can be confusing as are long names instead of shorter ones . Luckely we have shortcut options etc available

I have already given this solution on the forum long ago but here it is again:

- create your thumbnail file one way or another. vMix provides a command to produce thumbnails on the fly and a command to add any file to the project. A single shortcut can do it all at once.
- add this thumbnail as layer 1 to your input
- now your input shows whatever you decided
Done!

If you want to push it a little further, just add a trigger for this input to "hide" layer1 on transition in and to show it again on transition out.
Now you see real-time preview window in the input bar when your video is playing and your thumbnail when the video is paused.
thanks 2 users thanked DWAM for this useful post.

+1 for this feature

I am even OK with the thumbnail being some way lower resolution just to save system/GPU memory in the UI.

Not a bad work-around but doesn't having another input added now consume more video memory? I already have so many inputs than I can easily manage (even with categories) I don't know if I want thumbnail cards tossed in there.

It would be great to be able to choose a frame from the input as the thumbnail instead of it defaulting to the first frame. As mentioned, adding 20 images to use as thumbnails for 20 videos is a bit much for a workaround.

If you create a SD shortcut one can show a thumbnail of it (choose thumbnaisl for display option)
