Thanks. Has anyone come up with an audio quality best practices doc including vMix settings, connection quality specs, and recommended hardware types?

We think vMix is a great app. We want max out its potential for live music.

I would agree. Browsers aren't the best. A separate vmix to vmix call using vmixcall is quite good.

I would agree.
It's a small investment of $ 60 per caller. If video is not that important, you can also use the Basic Free with 768x576.

Great for simplicity and flexibility but I'm also disappointed with vMixCall audio. Can't use in good conscience with musical instruments. FB live stream can do an acceptable job with music from a smartphone. Does FB have some magic tech available nowhere else?

We just produced a bluegrass artist who played nothing but acoustic instruments over vMix Call and it worked really well. Single Neumann TLM 103 (into a Focusrite 2i2) with the Waves Abbey Road Saturator plug-in, and on the attendee viewer window it sounded like you were in a pro studio control room.
