Microsoft Adding NDI Support To Skype

Just read on this Skype blog that a new version for content creators will be released that includes the ability to place and record calls with support for NDI. Has anyone played around with the preview version yet?

With Skype for Content Creators, Windows 10 and Mac users will be able to select the Content Creators mode to place and record calls directly within NDI®–enabled software such as: Wirecast Xsplit Vmix Read Article here for Skype for Content Creators

It certainly looks interesting, since Microsoft explicitly include vMix in their Skype blog post. I shall head to their booth at NAB at some point and take a look.

Find out a few things if you can...
1. Will each caller be their own NDI feed? For multi-user calls? Or just one NDI feed (most likely).
2. Will it TAKE NDI as a camera & audio input.
Those are my biggest questions.

The biggest question that I would have would have to do with mix-minus audio.

Hello Everyone,
I am interested if desktop share and app share will be included,
.
Considering this is a new special version of Skype I would assume they would include all if the essential bells and whistles — and a way to deal with audio.
Great to see that vMix was included as an example — so someone at Skype is paying attention to what’s needed via NDI for programs like vMix.
Hopefully Skype will do it right — out of the box.

Of course in Windows NewTek has a free tool for emulating a webcam in the NDI v3.5 tools so this probably isn't such a problem. On Mac, it leaves a bit of a hole, although some NDI based tools like mimoLive can emulate a webcam

Those are my biggest questions. 1) Yes, as far as I can tell from a short chat on a noisy NAB booth, and without actually seeing a demo of any NDI connections, I believe an NDI source will be created for each caller, containing their video and audio. 2) As already mentioned, no, it does not (currently) accept an NDI feed as a local input. By implication, that also means it does not create mix-minus audio feeds to send to the caller(s). There should be a beta out in the next couple of months (probably), use of which will provide more accurate answers as to what it can and can't do, with regard to NDI.

does this basically mean we have an ndi bridge across networks now, so we don't have to just use it for a call with someone? or is not quite that level??

No, it just means you can get an NDI output generated on your local PC, containing a clean feed of the incoming skype caller's video+audio, re-en-coded as an NDI source. So instead of having to screen-grab the skype display window, or capture the HDMI output of a graphics card in order to use the incoming video, you can get it into vMix as a NDI source. Skype itself still works in exactly the same way as before over the WAN.
