I've just finished putting a new system together with a BM Quad 2.

Initially I could get a couple of sources to work but now it wont accept anything.

Anyone had a Blackmagic card die almost imediately?

Define "die."

Do you mean that BMD Media Express sees no inputs?
Or no card in the BMD Desktop Video Setup utility?
Or the card does not show up in Device Manager / Sound, Video and Game controllers, etc. section?

Did you try it in another slot yet?

To answer all your questions in order Tom.

I thought the card was totally 'dead' as it initially displayed some inputs in an unreliable, flakey manner, then I spent an entire evening where it wouldn't accept any inputs. Then it went back to being flakey.

When I can get a source to work it appears in Media Express and vMix.

The card appears in Desktop Video Setup and Device manager.

A bizzare thing that happens is when nothing will connect, every OUTPUT in DVS shows as 'NTSC' but when I can get a single INPUT source to work, 3 or 4 or the other channels suddenly show random OUTPUT settings I've not set up or saved.

I intially used the driver and software that came with the card but have since uninstalled eveything and reinstalled with the latest software from the website but the card's still not working correctly.

Thanks for taking an interest :)

I assume you mean PCI-E?

I might try this out of frustration but it doesn't feel like this the issue. The card, along with all 8 inputs shows in device manager and the BIOS shows that PCI-E 1 (GPU) has dropped from x16 to x8 which it should do when the MB recognizes a card installed in PCI-E 2.

Thanks for the suggestion :)

If you post hardware specs of the machine you use, we might be able to help better.

I would try changing the slot anyway.

I had a card not work in slot 5 (furthest from CPU) and would work in slot 3.

Also BMD tech support is very good. I generally am on hold for 15 minutes, but the guys are very knowledgeable and patient. I have returned a few cards over the years for repair or replacement.

I have the same issue happen 2 days ago !! I’m using a Sonnet thunderbolt PCIe chassis with a Quad 2 and a Duo 2 card in it, connected to an ASUS laptop. Its been great until now. The Duo 2 still works fine but the Quad 2 is no longer recognized by vMix or even the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup. It started by giving me errors in vMix until it actually crashed all together.

I tried it in another PC and also on a MacBook Pro where it used to work fine, but no go. So I don’t believe its related to OS. I also tried to update to latest Destop Video 10.9.7 driver but no luck. Went back to older versions but no luck there either.. there is no way to get the card back. I will call BlackMagic after xmas. I’ve only had the card for 4 months. Hope they can help. I have a show on 10 Jan.

All of the BMD cards that I have exhibit this behavior if the card is not set to accept the exact specs in the settings.

When using a new source, I read the specs (res, rate etc) using desktop video. Then using the utility I change the card to look for only that spec.

We have seen numerous reports of the Quad 2 misbehaving or dying outright. Decklink Duo 2, on the other hand, seems to work very well for most.

For eight inputs on a single card we would spend the extra and get the Aja Corvid 88 with or without a fan:

The OE version and the downloaded version of DVS doesn't have an option to preset an input format, only an output.

Using Blackmagic is like being in an abusive relationship, they keep telling you they've 'changed' and they wont hurt you this time but every time they suck you in and then smack you in the face with shame and disappointment.

The system is an i7 on Windows 10 64, based on an Asus Z270 board with 16gb ram and a 6gb GTX1060.

One time my Quad2 started acting really funny. It would only accept one input (only one was listed.)

I sent it back to blackmagic and they said the card lost its firmware. They low-level flashed it at the factory and I've had no issues since.

We had something simillar happen, what we did is put it in another PC with a different Desktop Video version, which made the card reflash to match the firmware, then put the card back into the main PC, reinstalled Desktop video and the card was re flashed with the correct firmware and it came back.

It's been a while but I installed the latest version of Desktop Video and the card seems more stable.

It's still fussy about what order kit is plugged/powered up.

Also it still seems to randomly assign output formats on unused connections :/
