Hi, Sorry for my english. Come from France. Using vMix since two years for live events with bocce. I very enjoy vMix with 3 caméras with firewire. We buy the Atem Television Studio for HD streaming for 2013. Please can you tell me if I can still use vMix with the Atem Television ? (ps : i'm not a professionnal in vidéo). Thanks a lot. The question would rather be : do you still need VMix ? La question serait plutôt: avez-vous encore besoin de VMix ?
PS: je suis plutôt un professionnel du son :) PS: I'm more an audio professional :)

Hi,
I would say that you MOST DEFINITELY still need vMix if you have an ATEM switcher!!!
We have 2 ATEM 1M/E switchers, one in our studio and one for outside broadcasts. We originally had an EchoLab MVS6 hardware switcher which was standard definition. We then moved to VidBlaster, a software solution. It was a cool interface but used huge amounts of resources to even operate in SD. It also didn't help that the developer had a bad attitude and wouldn't admit his software's shortcomings.
Next we found vMix! Martin has done a great job with this software !! It uses 1/6 of the resources in HD that VidBlaster used in SD. We have used it for a few years before getting our ATEMs. No disrespect to vMix, but there is just something to be said for a real hardware switcher with a dedicated control panel, if you can afford it!
So why do you still need vMix?
You can setup your second monitor output of vMix to go directly in to an HDMI input of your ATEM. vMix can be used to play back almost any video file format into a channel of your ATEM. You can do graphics on vMix and run them through the ATEM. You can use vMix to put an image from another computer's desktop into the ATEM over the network. Since you are already familiar with vMix, all these things will be easier to do.
I will add one important point:
ATEM switchers will accept only one resolution and frame rate at a time. If your cameras are 720p 50hz, for instance, the switcher and all devices connected to it must also be 720p 50hz. This is a hardware limitation and will never change. vMix, on the other hand, will happily mix and match different formats and frame rates all day long!
vMix will make up for MANY of the limitations of the ATEM that may not be obvious at first.
This is my take on why you still need vMix.
Hope this helps! Tony

I fully agree with Tony.
His story is identical with ours (except for the EchoLab MVS6 :) ). But all the rest (VidBlaster, Mike's attitude, VMix discovery, VMix reliability for long term etc) is identical.
Anyone owning an ATEM should use VMix, too. There is no way to rich a high standards with ATEM only.
Happy holidays!

Hi all,
The Atem TS is receive and discover it after an exchange !
"You can setup your second monitor output of vMix to go directly in to an HDMI input of your ATEM."
This interest me but don't understand how to do it ? I have to connect PC (HDMI out) to ATEM (HDMI input) or need to go between with a monitor (PC, HDMI out to Monitor and Monitor HDMI out to ATEM input) ?
I have a PC (Sony) where vMix is running. He had an HDMI output but when I put it on an monitor (HDMI input), I see all the windows of the "office" (bureau en français).
Thinks I do wrong but don't see the function to use in vMix to go directly in the Hdmi input :(.
Thanks (soon half 2013 !)
Christophe

Hi all,
First try of Atem last week. Need help to realise this (up) :

Thanks for all idéas. Need to keep vMix for incrustations and vidéos :)

@ sbpromotion If I understand you correctly, your laptop's HDMI out is configured to show the Desktop. Can you reconfigure it to be a secondary monitor in Display Settings?
@ tony and Clement Where in the chain is vMix best suited? As an input to the ATEM or vice versa? I see a loss of functionality at either end. My main attractions to the ATEM is as a hardware solution for capture and it's physical control surface option, but as you stated, the connectivity is limited, so using vmix to capture mixed resolutions and frame rates is great but that negates functionality of a control surface to switch cameras. And if vMix is only used for graphics and video playback, how do you handle replays and recordings? For that matter, how does the ATEM handle the vMix alpha channel for overlays? I agree that vMix augments the functionality of the ATEM, but I don't think it works the other way around and makes me wonder what advantage the ATEM brings to the table? I am curious to know what your experience has been.

Ice,
I can "connect to a projector" and : 1/ Deconnect the projector (or) (déconnecter le projecteur) 2/ Duplicate the projector (or) (dupliquer le projecteur) 3/ Extend the projector (or)(étendre le projecteur) 4/ Have only the projector (projecteur uniquement).
with an old acer (try tomorrow with a recent sony but think it is the same).
Thanks.
Christophe.

Which ATEM? The Tv Studio 4K will not accept input from a PC at this stage apparently. This is really a question for BlackMagic.

Change : Success in handle it (to TV Monitor, the Atem is with a friend)! Now have to find a PC with graphic cards who accept 1920 X 1050 or change resolution from caméras and make tests with the Atem. Think will have to play with the downstream key 1 and 2 ? Thanks Ice :)
