Our NDI recording app for macOS and Linux (and perhaps windows..) is taking shape as a commercial product and we wanted to ask potential users what they needed to see.

The app features a web interface and captures NDI streams *natively* into a variety of formats including ProRes QuickTime movies, DNxHD files and MP4 H.264/AAC files.

We have already ported the basic app (which was developed on macOS) to Ubuntu 16.x and CentOS 7 (Red Hat) and it should be possible to get it onto Windows too if there is genuine demand. Given that NewTek already have a free NDI recorder for Windows, we may need some persuasion that there is a commercial opportunity for another Windows NDI recorder.

There are no specific system requirements except an X86 based computer which is basically NDI compatible (we don't plan to offer an ARM version at the moment). You don't need any fancy AVX type GPU stuff, so there may also be applications for this in cloud-based workflows using AWS or Azure.

The recorder is designed to operate in a multichannel mode. So far we haven't decided whether to make it just support 4 or 8 channels, or allow users to create as many parallel recordings as they want. Clearly we need to monitor CPU usage and somehow control the load - and that is all to be determined. As a very coarse guideline, I just recorded a 1080/50i NDI source into a ProRes quicktime movie, and it was using around 100% (out of 1600%) on a 2009 MacPro Tower (which has 2 x 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - 16 hyper threads). So it might seem that 8 channels is pretty likely straightforward on a machine of this class, and probably more. Recording into H.264 is more CPU intensive and the same recording test used 300% (of 1600%) for MP4 (H.264/AAC) so you might only get 4 channels in that mode on this computer.

We may also decide to implement a RAM buffer (as we do with our professional base band recording system PictureReady) - since this would help to avoid dropping frames where the system or storage is starting to get loaded.

if you mean MPEG-2 Video and MPEG Layer 2 audio, then yes - this is already supported.

We will create a set of presets for common formats, so any other requested formats would be welcomed.

MPG file (Mpeg2 Video, MPEG layer 2 audio)
