720x576 is the standard pixel size for Standard Def PAL video in digital form, for both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Neither aspect ratio uses "square pixels", both are anamorphic, although 16:9 more so than 4:3. In your edit software you need to tell it what aspect ratio to use for this footage. In Adobe Premiere, for example, you use the Interpret-As function (under Clip->Modify) to use 720x576 clips as either standard or widescreen aspect ratio.
