Hi, I'm just testing out vMix for use in a school for simple production work.

As a test I've been asked to set up a video presentation, with some cut slides and a live feed from a webcam.
The first parts of this are non problem, it's just the webcam i'm having problems with.

First test was just using the built-in webcam in the laptop i'll be using, this seems to work with no problems.
Next step, grabbed a Logitech HD C510 Webcam from another computer as the subjects obviously won't be in control of the mixing.
After setting the capture input settings i am informed that "No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection."
With error data:-
DirectShowLib-2005
AddNewInput

After a few searches there are a number of sites saying that this is a codec problem, but the drivers are installed and logitech software loads and displays fine.
Is there an easy fix for this? or an obvious problem in using this webcam with vMix?
Alternatively, can you recommend a webcam model that is known to work.

Obviously i'd like to work with something better than a webcam, but as this is to be run from a laptop which doesn't have USB 3.0, so a BlackMagic Design Intensity Shuttle isn't really an option, and i'm not sure the cheaper options on capture devices, like a compro C200 are worth bothering with in this scenario? (i can get my hands on a panasonic video camera if that is likely to work).

Thanks for any assistance you can offer on this,
MK

Hi MK,

Most SD webcams should work ok and we have tested the Microsoft LifeCam HD, but it looks like the new logitech HD webcams might be doing something different again that vMix doesn't understand.

Test the following to see what happens:

1. Download and install Media Player Classic HC from here: http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
2. Run MPC-HC and from the View menu go to options.
3. Select the Capture option under Playback and select your Logitech from the analog settings and click OK.
4. From the file menu select "Open Device..."
5. This should successfully display your webcam.
6. From the Play menu go to Filters and select "Smart Tee (video)".
7. Copy the information contained in the window and post it here.

With this information I should be able to see what is going on.

Apparently there are "No capture filters" according to MPC-HC.
I find this odd, as i can capture from the built-in webcam in vMix...

I've checked that directx is up-to-date, just going to install directx sdk to see if that makes a difference.
I'm running Win7 Enterprise x64 if that makes any difference.

DirectX SDK hasn't made a difference.

When selecting the camera in vMix, tick the VMR box and see if it helps.

Just tried it on a XP machine with some interesting results..
Plugged in the camera, and it worked no problems. After an update the logitech drivers were installed, following which it no longer worked with vMix! Complete uninstall of logitech drivers and it worked again.

I tested this out on the win7x64 laptop, after uninstalling the logitech drivers and disconnecting it from the network to stop it from automatically downloading the drivers it just installed as a "USB composite device" with associated video and audio devices. This works in vMix, not entirely ideal, but i can work with this for the time being :)

Hopefully you'll be able to recreate the strange behaviour of the logitech drivers.
Other than that i've got everything working, hopefully the powers that be will be as impressed as i am with vMix :)

Many thanks for a great piece of software and your assistance

Hi MK,

Just received the C510 today and after a bit of testing have worked out what the issue is.
It will be fixed in vMix 2010 v9 due out soon. In testing I discovered that the camera can output full frame rate 720p when the drivers are installed (and with the vMix fix) which is much better than the LifeCam Cinema which only seems to get around 20fps.

The fix should also resolve issues with other webcams that use the I420 codec.

Regards,

Martin

Glad to know it's not something completely obscure.

Thanks again for your assistance with this issue :)
