Hi vMixers,

I'm currently looking for a MIDI controller for vMix and came over the new Maschine Jam by Native Instruments.

Watch introduction video of Maschine Jam here.

And this is how it looks like.
UserPostedImage

Ideas on how I would like to use those buttons:

On the right top I'd asign the buttons "Song", "Step", "Pad Mode", "Clear" and "Duplicate" like:
[toggle] Song - [on/off] Fullscreen
[toggle] Step - [open/close] Save Window
[press] Pad Mode - [load] last preset/autosave
[toggle] Clear - [open/close] Statistics Window
[toggle] Duplicate - [lock/unlock] Controller

Under those 5 buttons there is a 4 button cross type layout. I'd use it for changeing the titles ("left" and "right"). To see if the text is the right one, simply press "up" and it will act as a Preview OverlayOn/Off toggle. To go live with the title, press "down".
The button below the cross (NOTE REPEAT) is for opening/closing the "Overlay Settings" Window.

To the right - also the main area - you have 10 by 8 colored buttonmatrix for all the crazy stuff like cut, merge, wipe... to the selected camera: Button 1 = PreviewCamera 1, Button 2 = PreviewCamera 2...
I think you can also find enought space for the 4 overlay channels. "A" to "H" buttons can toggle between the colored Input categories.

The Level section on the far top right would be great for the master audio monitoring. Under it there is a 2 by 2 matrix with MST, GRP, IN1 and a headphone symbol. I'd use them like:
[toggle] MST - [mute/unmute] Master Audio
[toggle] GRP - [open/close] Audio Setting Master (Cogweel) Window
[toggle] IN1 - [open/close] Audio Engine (i) Window
[toggle] headphone - [mute/unmute] Headphone Audio or [change] between headphone and master audio and use the knop under it for master volume.
[toggle] Browse - [open/close] Settings Window

The darker/black row has in my opinon the most complex but interesting keys.
[select] Macro - [crop, zoom with touch stribes] in Camera 1, 2, ... for max. times 1,5 (swipe up = zoom in, swipe down = zoom out)
[select] Level - [Volume up/down] of Camera 1, 2, ... (swipe up = Volume up, swipe down = Volume down)
[select] AUX - [Volume up/down] of Audio Inputs 1, 2, ... (swipe up = Volume up, swipe down = Volume down)
[select] Control + Cam 1, 2, ... [open/close] Input: Cam ... and Colour Adjust Menu Window. The first "swipe stripe" can affect the "Red" of that specific camera. The second one "Green" and the next one "Blue", "Saturation", "Black Stretch", "White Stretch" and "Alpha". The last one is free or there could be a combination between "Auto WB", "Auto Black White Stretch" or something like that.

[select] Auto + Cam 1, 2, ... [open/close] Input: Cam ... and Position Menu Window. The first "swipe stripe" can affect the Main "Zoom" of that specific camera. The secon one "Pan X" and the next one "Pan Y", "Rotate Z", "CropX1", "CropY1", "CropX2", "CropY2".

Things that would be awesome: see the Volume Level on the 11 led/get a visible feedback of your setting for color....

[select] Shift (is kinda like the default of the touch stripes): T-Bar for the Camera 1, 2, ...
Simply press on the touch stripe -> it'll load the camera to preview and by swiping up or down, you have a T-Bar.

I've also got some ideas for the button: Perform, Notes, Lock, Tune & Swing.
[toggle] Perform - [open/close] Recording Settings (Cogweel) Window
[toggle] Notes - [open/close] Settings of External Output / NDI (Cogweel) Window
[toggle] Lock - [open/close] Streaming Settings (Cogweel) Window
[toggle] Tune - [open/close] MultiCoder (Cogweel) Window
[toggle] Swing - [open/close] PlayList (Cogweel) Window
(for Replay you would use a different button, but this can be accived with another controller)

On the Mid-Bottom section you have the button: Play, Rec, < , > , Tempo, Grid, Solo and Mute:
[toggle] Play - [start/stop] streaming
[toggle] Rec - [start/stop] recording
[toggle] < - [start/stop] External
[toggle] > - [start/stop] Multicoder
[toggle] tempo - [pin/unpin] RePlay
[toggle] grid - [pin/unpin] Playlist Window
[toggle] solo - [pin/unpin] Audio Mixer Window
[toggle] mute - [lock/unlock] Play, Rec, < , > , Tempo, Grid, Solo

And with the last Button "Select" you can [open/close] the Add Input (Input Select) Window

This is just an idea on how I (if I were able to) would asign the buttons.
If you think I forgot something. Please let me know.

This device with a mouse woud be in my opinion best controller for vMix. (price ~400$/400€ on amazon)

I disagree, xkeys is the best as that is customizable.

I also disagree - MKS SoftKeys for VMIX is far more flexible. (LOL sorry had to chip in)

1. 100% layout configurable against your 'Preset' - FULLY customisable
2. 100's of buttons, t-bars, Faders, interlocks, LED displays, timers in library - plus your own custom shapes & colours
3. Simultaniously Controls VMIX, ATEM, and Panasonic Vision Mixers
4. Simultaniously Controls Blackmagic VideoHub switches, Hyperdecks, Multiviwers, etc
5. Controls Sony VISCA (RS232 or 422) robotic cameras, and IP VISCA via VMIX's own interface
6. SMS Text Messaging system with Moderation
7. Allows VMIX to be used as a traditional vision mixer up to 144 inputs (6 x banks of 24 inputs)
8. Delegate row for 4 x DSK's and 2 x Outputs and 2 x Full Screen.
9. Scripting on each button for complex multi-operation function on a single key press. (For example, a single key press white balance that moves and zoom up to 7 Sony cameras to point at pre positioned white balance target, performs white balance, and returns cameras to original positions)
10. Turns VMIX A/B audio outputs in a simple to use two channel talk back system
11. Multiple panels can be run against one VMIX, for multiple operators.
12. Remote control of VMIX over the internet - Produce from the other side of the world - just select 127.0.0.1 for local, or IP address of VMIX for remote operation.
13. DMX lighting control (using external USB > DMX controller)
14. Been used 24x7 in 10 professional broadcast TV studios for over a year - well tested.

Works with any sub $300 touch screen monitor, or even things like a PIPO X9 for $100

Not Available in any shops, but if there is enough interest I will consider commercialising it.

And this is how it looks.....

Well, this might be the best, but as you mentioned: 300$ for a touchdisplay + I imagine that you will not share the software for free.

I fell in love. HOW CAN I GET THIS!? :)

Sorry, but xkeys is no option for me. Way too expensive and no audiocontrol...
How do you handle your production?

Audio is done by a separate sound engineer or if it are just a few mics, by myself trough a audio mixer.
If I would really want to, I can also hook up a BCF200 to vMix, but most of the time that's unnecessary.
I level the audio of the clips I playout from vmix when making the show.
I want my preview row and transition buttons straight in front of me, not audio controls.

We used touchscreen before, when using ATEM. The downside of touchscreen in my opinion is that it makes you look at the control surface for everything, while I can keep looking at the multiview when using dedicated keys. Just because I can feel them and they are in a place I can keep my hands the entire show without audio controls in the way that need me to lift my hands. When I press a preview key, I can immediately check preview and transition instead of having to look up again first. It's all little time, but added together it is a lot.
When you have to take your eyes away from the multiview every time, you miss things happening when you are not looking, and when you look back at the multiview you even need little more time to get back concentrated.

I am not saying this is the same for you, or for kgoodyer, but this is what you get from me for asking what is the best controller for vmix and giving that as your own choice.
My own humble opinion, clearly substantiated. ;)

That's my problem, I need a device which is capable of doing the audio and the camera. In my usecase, there is only one person, making the show.
I also think that the shortcuts for vMix aren't enough. There isn't one for opening/closing Settings, or even colour adjustment shortcuts. Which is very unfortunate.

I agree with that, but if there is a software for extended shortcuts for vMix, there is a way to create a controller as I'd prefer.

As a person from the old school, and also more used to a professional mixer, I prefer this control; surface....very practical, and well designed...would love to get this software...this will make my day for sure.....

I will chime in here as I am using a hardware controller from Palette Gear (https://palettegear.com). It was made for the image editing industry (think photoshop) but I really like it as a vMix controller. You can add to it as you need with buttons sliders and knobs. They just magnetically stack next to each other in whatever order/arrangement you want.

My setup has six buttons, a slider and a knob. One button is green and I use it for fastplay. Four of them are blue for my camera inputs to preview. The last button is purple and it layers a desktop capture - toggle on and off. The slider is a fader and works just like the software fader. The knob I mapped to the main audio in volume as I do have an audio engineer running a board that feeds vMix the sound mix.

Sascha, there is no reason you could not add as many knobs as you need for different volume levels but there is one limitation/down-side to these knobs.

They are not motorized so if you adjust any volume in the vMix software then move the knob assigned to it the level will jump to the last knob setting and move from there.

My setup cost around $320. Additional buttons are $30, knobs and sliders are $50 each.

The last thing to know is that is a software based MIDI controller so the Palette software needs to run in the background for it to work.

I have been using it for weeks now and I am very happy with it.

@ DC Mike

Well that came out of left field...
I'm guessing CGI mock-up or something about to be released, because it's the first I've seen or heard of such a thing as the vMix Control Surface 2400.

Fun fact. I was thinking on buying these. But most of the time I'm working on the field.
So I really have to glue those on a board, so they stay as I want to. Which would be cruel..

Unfortunately no audio control, but the little display looks very nice and is interesting!
