I've been looking at various specialized cameras for a while. I recently discovered the SUB2R camera, which is an effort to create a modular camera that can be extended in arbitrary ways.

The camera has can be ordered 720p, 1080p or 4K. It supports high frame rates at 720p and 1080p. It has USB 3.1C and Gig-Ethernet connectivity. It's programmable and largely open source.

The team just confirmed that it could be made NDI-capable...eventually. They're just about to ship their first 24 beta samples to folks, so it's still early days for the effort.

We've scheduled them to appear on the IP Communications Hangout/Podcast on Aug 5th.

Watched your show, and saw the part about the SUB2R. Could be something with the ability to customize it.

Interesting show, I'd never watched before. Are you four guys always part of the show?

Last week was a less formal show as we didn't have a guest. There are a core group of 4-6 who are "regulars." We are then joined by various others who are part of the extended community.

The small group last week were the core team:

- Randy Resnick, Founder (Bordeaux, FR)
- Michael Graves, ZipDX (Houston TX)
- James Body, Head of R&D Truphone (London, UK)
- Andy Smith, Telecom Engineer extraordinaire, R&D Truphone (UK)

What we do is likely unique. Since we're in the IP Telecom space we try to combine many modes of interaction. We try to be fully interactive with the live audience, however they may join.

- We use a Hangout-On-Air (15 seats)
- The HOA sends a stream to YouTube Live
- We occasionally also stream to facebook Live
- Hangout audio is interconnected with the ZipDX audio conference bridge
- Allows full voice-only participation by people "on-the-phone"
- The conference bridge operates in HDVoice (G.722)
- It's accessible via SIP URI (200901@conf.zipdx.com)
- It's also accessible via dial-in numbers in many countries
- It also feeds a live MP3 stream
- There's a IRC channel (vuc.freenode.net) for chat directly with the team & community
- The IRC channel is federated via Matrix.org, making it accessible in a variety of ways

I use vMix to deliver the show open and augment the presentation as necessary to meet the needs of the guest(s). I used to use Wirecast, until I discovered vMix...which is very simply better.

Randy, being a Mac user, uses Wirecast and CamTwist.

Just a brief follow-up. Rich Neumann, the co-founder of SUB2R, will be discussing the SUB2R camera this coming Friday, Aug 5th at 12 noon EDT.

See http://vuc.me for details on various ways to connect.

They should make it bigger, with a real sensor and option to connect a lens of your own choise.
When I look at this lens, it is the size of the RJ45 output on the other side. So I would not expect anything more than a simple webcam quality picture of it.

I've seen the output and it's nothing like a traditional webcam. There are those who have called for a larger sensor. The modular design of the camera makes this possible over time.

There are a diversity of good quality, inexpensive, 12mm lenses available. In discussion the designer say that they are planning an adapter for "legacy glass" that includes Canon & Nikon lenses.

The opportunity to take programmatic control of every aspect of the camera's function is the major opportunity.
