Hello everyone,

I am building a large NDI video capture solution for research. The application is to capture 20 cameras 2k @ 60 fps (main application is soccer/football capture).

We want to record all of the video to disk. There is no real need for realtime or compression on the fly etc.

Really I just need to aim the PTZ cameras and start/stop record. Also, the cameras need to be synced. I am possibly trying to stick with NDI vs. having a system that requires Time Code.

Is it possible to build a System that can handle 20 cameras? I have seen the https://www.vmix.com/pro...ce-systems.aspx#obtanium and I understand the cost/complexity - we should have budget.

Or would it be more advisable to link several Systems together? Does this make Sync difficult?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it sound doable or terrifying?

It should be on two Obtainium computers.

10 cameras each.

But I still see it as being tight and pushing the limit. Especially for the sustained recording speed of the SSD.

Then the other problem is that vMix still doesn't accept external time codes. From what I understand.

I will have to look into the TC solution. Maybe using NTP?

Assuming 2K60 means 1080p60, a Z890 + Ultra 7 270K system might just be enough.

Personally, I would test this system:

PC case with plenty of fans
850W ATX power supply (or higher, depending on GPU)
MSI MEG Z890 UNIFY-X
Intel Ultra 7 270K Plus
CPU cooler
2 x 32GB DDR5 7200 CL34
RTX 5070 Ti or higher (or RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell or higher)
Samsung 990 Pro 1TB (for Windows)
3 x Samsung 9100 Pro 4TB (for recording)
PCIe 5.0 x4 to M.2 adapter card
OWC Mercury Helios 3S + Intel E610-XT2 PCIe card (for dual 10Gbps LAN) on the TB4_1 port
Bonus = TB4 SSD enclosure + PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 SSD on the TB_2 port

As a bonus, the Z890 chipset supports PCIe 4.0 x8, so you can add two more PCIe 4.0 x4 SSDs:
1 in an M.2 slot
1 on a PCIe card with an M.2 slot

Here is a diagram showing everything that can be connected.

For the MultiCorder, you'll likely need to record in MP4 across multiple SSDs and use a hardware encoder.

This configuration might be sufficient; it supports a GPU, four M.2 SSDs, and two TB4 ports thanks to the 24 CPU PCIe lanes on the Intel Ultra 7 270K Plus.
You can also add more drives via the ports connected to the Z890 chipset.

Given that a vMix forum user reported using ten BirdDog 4K units with an i9-12900K without issues, this setup might well be enough.

I think it's worth testing to find the limits rather than investing in an Obtanium system.
