Hi!
We´re looking into replacing an SDI based mixing system with vMix to get a more integrated setup, mostly when it comes to CG graphics and replay funktions. We want fewer boxes in the rack and fewer subsystems.

We already have a robust setup with SDI signals coming in from cameras, recievers etc.
Today we have 5 SDI signals that has to be handled in the new setup.

If and when doing the transfer to vMix, would you recommend sticking with the SDI setup (which means getting an SDI capture card like a DeckLink Quad and probably more wiring) or switching to NDI from the cameras and systems in our setup that supports NDI?

We prioritize stability and robustness in our system. So what is generally a more safe way with vmix, SDI or NDI?

Thanks in advance for input regarding this!

My eperience:
NDI works, but you need to pay attention to what gear you use. With NDI you need a very good understanding of the IP domain, networks, VLANs, routing and so on.
A few examples:
Canon N700. 100% flawless over NDI, not a single issue.
Birddog. So or so. I just did a concert with 3x P200. 2 were fine from the get go. One I needed to reboot 3 times to get it going reliable.
Netgear 43xx AV line. Very good. 10G. If you start from scratch go 10G only. The more you get into NDI the more signals will be added and a 1G link is quickly exhausted.

Mikrotik. I love the flexibility and detail. But for some it might be a nightmare. They have good 10G/100G/400G gear. What they lack is good PoE options. I use it as router.
Kiloview N60/P2/P3 robust. I like the N60s as they are transceivers, have the NDI bridge implemented and are flexible. P2/P3 for wireless/remote with bonding. Central device management.
I hope that helps a bit.

@ TL68

SDI is going to be far more stable and reliable with vMix, not to mention less demanding on system resources.

It is also has to do with cost and complexity. An sdi card like bmd quad 2 costs less than 1k and with having already sdi cameras and cables, the transmission from hw mixer to vMix is easy. Install the card in the proper pc and ready to fit the existed sdi cables.
Also at any moment you can use vmix to do sdi to ndi or to the new vmix 29 omt protocol.And this is a new "player" in the market that may change many things around AV equipment.
Personally for now i would go for sdi capture card system that is confirmed that work ok into vmix. And wait to see in the future what will happen in OMT side in equipment cause is free and open source (and designed by vmix team), so in some things it would be better for equipment that will be for use in vmix.

Something we are experimenting with is using a hardware encoder, but letting vMix do the decoding. Originally we went: Encoder > Decoder > Decklink > vMix. But since testing with the encoder sending directly to vMix we have removed a full second of latency and are down to around 500ms. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the Decklink card or Decoder + Decklink is putting in a lot of latency.

We use decent high end gaming rigs, so haven't seen any issues with the PCs doing the decoding.

With the NZXT Z790, the DeckLink card isn't on a CPU slot as recommended by vmix.
This may explain the latency.

i9-14900kf = 20 PCIe CPU lanes
distributed across the NZXT Z790
PCIe x16_1 = x16 = GPU
M2_1 = x4 = SSD

You need a card that can distribute the PCIe CPU lanes into:
PCIe 1 = x8 = GPU
PCIe 2 = x8 = DeckLink card
M2_1 = x4 = SSD

preference sdi for system

Ah ok, I think that makes sense to me, thanks

NDI has all kind of issues.

Definately stick with SDI if possible. Would't do this kind of live production relaying on NDI:
