I am not sure this is the right category.

Here is my question.

I am adding a new input - a video file which has the size of 672px x 256px

vMix is set to 1280 x 720 for output size, and output aspect ratio - widescreen.

So when I add the video, the real image size is distorted to 1280 x 542.

If vMix would keep the aspect ratio of the video, the new video size would be 1280 x 488

But I cannot set a custom aspect ratio and vMix is making the video bigger in height: should be 1280 x 488, but it makes it 1280 x 542

I saw a post how to keep the aspect ration of the static image: by using 'photos' when adding input, instead of 'image'.

Also I am aware that there is an option to go to 'position' and change the zoom to make the video to look as wanted.
I tried to use zoom, but it is really hard to make the video to have exactly same aspect ratio as in original video.
I don't know what values are displayed there while changing the zoom.

Does my issue have a better workaround than I already listed here?
Or there is no solution and this could be considered as a feature request?

Here is what I get for the various available aspect ratio options:

1280 x 720 - Output Size (vMix -> Settings -> Display)

672 x 256 - original size of input video

1280 x 488 - expected non-distorted size.

But this size I get when importing to vMiX:

normal => 1280 x 364 (height smaller than needed)
widescreen => 1280 x 542 (height bigger than needed)
anamorphic => 1280 x 542 (height bigger than needed)

thanks. With the most updated vMix I don't see "source" aspect ratio.. there is normal, widescreen and anamorphic only.
Do you mean "normal"?

Zoom is a workaround, but that would be great if I could see pixels instead of weird numbers while I am changing zoom or position...

If I would see pixel values I would be able to adjust perfectly and accurately the image to original aspect ratio.
Is there any way to see pixel values there?

very weird...
just fully uninstalled 13 and installed 14.0.0.57 (x64) and only have normal, widescreen and anamorphic.
No 'source'...

I don't know why is that... any ideas?

I am not all that familiar with anamorphic aspect ratio inputs in vMix or why your video is resized the way it is, other than maybe there is some sort of over scan dimensions it is detecting in the video.
Perhaps Martin can chime in as to how vMix handles or conforms different sized inputs.
In any event, I suspect using "source" should give you the closest proximity to the original and playing with the Y zoom slider might give you a little less vertical stretch if that is what you are after.
If you don't mind my asking, what video format is your video file? Is it purely anamorphic?

thanks to Jesus, there is a workaround that helped me to achieve accurate and wanted results.

If anyone need, I am sharing it with others. Hope that helps anybody.



1. Let's say your project size is 1280 x 720 (in settings, aspect ratio: widescreen)
2. Let's say your video size is 672 x 256 (in input settings, aspect ratio: source)
3. Calculate what would be video height if width stretched to 1280px width:

672 x 256
1280 x Z

Z=(1280*256)/672 ~ 488 px

So my new video size (for 1280 x 720 format) would be 1280 x 488

4. Make an PNG image 1280 x 720 with 1280 x 488 cropped in the middle, see pic below


5. Add your video to vMix input 1
6. Add your image to vMix input 2

7. overlay input with image over input with video


8. Click on Fullscreen (this is to have more accurate results)


9. Go to Video Input 1 settings


10. Go to Position and play with "Zoom Y". Adjust it with mouse and then with keyboard for more accuracy. On the fullscreen (in the background) you will see the effects right away. Adjust the video "Zoom Y" so top and bottom edges will reach red edges of the image.

1) 672 x 256 video for 1280 x 720 vMix project size: Y Zoom = 0.904
2) 704 x 368 video for 1280 x 720 vMix project size: Y Zoom = 0.9315

The y-zoom would be the same if I would have same video size for all videos.

800 x 600 => 4/3 = 1.(3) asp ratio
672 x 256 => 2.625 asp ratio
704 x 368 => 1.913 asp ratio


So we have here 3 different aspect ratios => will have different y-zoom values.
