Hi

Here's a film mainly done from a live production I'm quite satisfied with. It was a caritative event to raise money so the budget was limited. It's only a small extract from a 3 hours performance. Everything was done in a single (long) day, absolutely no rehearsals, the musicians arrived 2 hours before the show, we only could ask them to get on stage for light adjustments. The acoustic in this room is pretty lame, my sound technician did a great job with only a pair of microphones which had to be invisible. There are no technological aspects in this production, it's pure live switching - what I like the most - where only artistic considerations matter.

The crew was composed of 5 people:
- 2 excellent cameramen (one of them was responsible for the lightning)
- 1 sound engineer
- 1 video technician who also operated a PTZ during the show
- 1 director

The equipments:
- 2 Panasonic HDX700 with Fujinon optics and full servo Iris/Zoom/Focus control kit on the tripods arm
- 2 Canon HF G25 (1 for large angle from the ceiling, the other on a motorized PTZ head)
- 2 mikes for stereo take with a Yamaha audio mixer
- 4 1K tungstene spot lights (I don't know the name/type in english - "Découpe" in french)
- 1 intercom unit
- and last but not least: vMix ! ;o)

No multirecording or other post-production possibilities, no CCU. We did the color matching manually.
It had to be real live production with a single recording, no right for mistakes. The show was also displayed on several big screen TVs at the venue.

Bien fait M. de Lafontaine!
I'm curious about what challenges you may have had in colour matching or if either camera brand or image sensor gave you any particular trouble and/or how quickly you had to set it up?
(I'm guessing the Panasonics did the close-ups (softly rich) and the Canons were used for wides and covers (sharply bold) but overall colours looked pretty close)

Color matching was both complex and simple...
Complex because we had 2 35000€ cameras with fabulous optics and large sensors and 2 800€ basic camcorders. The guy I rented the pannies to said we wouldn't make it, that it was impossible. When he saw the video in the end he was very sad and I guess a little worried...
Simple because we mastered the lightning and it was constant, no variation. This was the key for success.

It took us about 30/40 minutes, it wasn't that difficult. I don't remember exactly which settings we had but it was a mix of iris control (aperture) and color correction on the Canons (in Cinema mode). Obviously, first we started to set the Canons which have poor controls for this and then we modified the Panasonics which were certainly a little under-exploited not to create a too obvious gap between the models.

In the end it's not perfect but for the budget we had I'm not ashamed and I'm very thankful for my guys that day, the whole team was on top!

Nice job! In particular given what you have at hand in terms of lighting and mikes. Really crisp!

Did you consider/try using Fades and/or the T-bar? (To be honest I have not yet watched the whole concert, so maybe I missed such switches).

You're right Richard I did it all with cuts and I regret this. I'm not a big fan of quick fades and I'm used to switch "on sound/tempo" even for speeches but there was room enough for long fades using the T-Bar, especially when the cellist was alone on stage.

Great work Guillaume . This is exactly the kind of thing I am building my system for (in a small way in my recording studio )and I'm very impressed .no matter what kind of equipment you have it's all about your skills with lighting and knowledge of the cameras ! Inspiring .

Great job!
My favourite and best part is side camera angle of woman, black background and very nice light. Great capture!
Nice matched colors on different cameras, I had the same problem and had t oplay in vMix color adjustment to match it. I know ehat problems it makes when there are different cameras on live show.

Yes great production!! Was the audio mixed in vmix and was it foh mix or a different mix? ,only criticism would be to have a fill light on background to eliminate those shadows ,and add some color,and mix is very dry,in means of processing,but that's ok ,i usally multitrack audio and mix later .that Chello would be nice with a touch of verb on it ....but it is real good and. Great cam work .i know it's hard!!
