I notice a lot of activity on the forum: great.

would it be possible to expand the active discussion window, now set to 5, and expand it to something like 10.

I don't know who is in charge of maintaining the forum, Martin?

further: would it be possible to have new registered users put the country as a must have field. I see a lot of users but not where they are working in the world. so difficult to check for people nearby...

For the active topics, you can click My Topics above and choose a period to get all activity since "last visit" for example.
