So I have this idea of live streaming events with Vmix for a side business. (Weddings, meetings, events, etc.) Any suggestions on some cheap cameras to begin with? Is it possible to hook up a few 4K phones? Is there something comparable? I've been out of the video loop for a while but it seems like it's much easier to get a good video from cheaper devices.

Hi Ben and welcome to the forum.

Take time to search the forum, it is full of advices for equipments.
Working with smartphones is possible but maybe not the best option

Hei Ben,

I think a good starting point are consumer or prosumer camcorders from Canon, Sony, etc. Just make sure the device has an HDMI output without overlays ("clean HDMI out").

When we started out, we used canon legria mini x (fisheye) and canon xha1 second hand via component. We invested a lot in fake peli cases and other stuff like cages to look 'pro'.

It worked out well, we have a lot of job now.

If we would have started with phones or security cams, I don't think anyone would have hired us. People who pay for something, want at least the impression that you're pro, to justify the cost.

That's what I was thinking too. Anyone can use a phone and most would do it for free. I just discovered https://getmevo.com. I'm curious if anyone has used that yet. Looks like it's not perfect, but could be useful for a multicam shoot.

The Mevo only streams to Livestream, since it is one of their products and Facebook. See Tom Sinclair's post

For that price of $399, you would be better off buying a GoPro 4K camera. The GoPro has HDMI output, the Mevo doesn't.

As FAndreas and Ittaidv suggested, look at Sony, Canon, etc. You can find something used on eBay or from BH Photo or Adorama that have used gear that carries a 90 day warranty.
