I use vmix mainly to record presentations on meetings and symposia and all that. the presenter will use a powerpoint and present.

one key aspect is using a laser pointer to point out parts, here this there that... but when capturing with vmix using desktop capture, you can not capture the laser pointer. so i switch to a wide camera view of the presenter pointing. sometimes even give them a presenter stick to point out more clearly.

recording a small laser dot is a nightmare...

but, by mistake or devine intervention i mistyped something in google and arrived at the logitech site to see they have a brand new pointer out, the spotlight. its on sale just now, february 2017, available in apple stores. apple even let them use the name spotlight...

close friends logitech and apple...

I jumped on the train to amsterdam, got the presenter, installed it with the app and tested it. This is the missing link for me.

I can choose between three types of pointers

- a circle and set size
- magnifying glass and set size
- a spotlight with set size.
you can choose to set pointer on or of, it will be in the middle.

the presenter has three buttons, a large forward, small backward and pointer button on top. thats it. connect through a usb device or bluetooth.

great brilliant beautifull and the best thing is: it is equally beautifull in the desktop capture in my vmix recording, youpeee!!!

I have tried everything from gyro mouse to abusing my kids nintendo joysticks that you can fool with candles beside the big screen and direct your mouse pointer... but this thing makes my day, no my month, no my whole year.... 2017 here I come to record....

check ot out and i will post an example next week - have a busy week recording ahead...

Yes, it realy looks like a game changer for doing and capturing presentations.
Here is a short technical demonstration:

Looks nice! A lot of cool features like vibrating alerts, timer and for sure the highlight zone.
For 129 euro I wished the range was more than 30m (100 feet).

A good complement to Pavlov PerfectCue for small events for sure !

there are a few tricks you can do for extending the range:

1 you can attach the dongle on a long usb cable and put it up high to ensure line of sight

2 not tested yet, but the laptop with the powerpoint can be on the stage and you can control it remotely via a second laptop that controls the laptop with the powerpoint. this way the presenter is close.

for high range powerpoint control i use a different system interspace industries, goes up to 100m

for desktopcapture to be smooth the laptop should be connected by cable to the recorder, or at least the wifi should be a cable connection to the vmix recorder, having both operate wirelessly results in a non smooth spotlight.

you can set the spotlight speed also.

the timer only works when in splitscreen and presenter mode, so you see the counter on the presenters preview screen. its a bit cumbersome and i lost the timerwindow a few times because it got to the back of the windows.

anyway will use it next week so excited to hear the reaction of my client.

when in presenter slit screen mode the screen is extended, so the spotlight can move over to the preview screen off from the projected screen.

i set holding foreward and backward to advance quickly to the next slides...

Stefan,
Thanks for pointing out this pointer (sic!)

My experience is that in the vast majority of situations where a presenter use a (laser)pointer, it is used due to a ill designed presentation and/or a not so good presenter. Can you share some videos where a pointer was used effectively?

the more technical the presentation, about instructions, models, graphs, etc etc the more info on a slide and the presenter will have to pont out things.

but I agree in most cases less is more.

here a still from one of the presentations. when i record a piblic video when my presenter is used I will post the link.

important also: this is a presenter that the presenter really likes to use....
