I would like to build a new setup around a mac mini. If I need to I can use a windows PC. I want to input two HD-SDI cameras mix and record to a hard drive. Do I need a separate card for each camera, or if I buy one card with like 4 inputs will that work? Also is the codec needed for HD video record onto the hard drive free? As far as the Mac mini goes I know I will have to buy something external for the cards to connect. What card would you suggest? I am trying to keep cost down because if it gets close to $1000 I can just go buy a dedicated hardware switcher. Thank you for your help!

Hi,
You could still use a single capture card. One we can recommend is the Blackmagic Design Decklink Duo. Since you are using a Mac Mini you would need some kind of housing, such as the Sonnet Echo Express Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis which you install the capture card into and then use thunderbolt to connect to your Mac Mini. I believe these two combined may just go over the $1000 mark, but you could research cheaper alternatives to the above I have given.

Just to add to the above, its worth mentioning that vMix includes many additional features over a dedicated switcher, including being able to add a vast array of different video formats.

If you factor this into the cost of the extra hardware, a dedicated switcher will appear alot more expensive. Of course this does depend on what you are doing with your setup.
