So, I went ahead and bought a new Asus GL502VM laptop with USB-C for Thunderbolt 3. This to attach a PCIe expansion box with cards for our video inputs. Problem is that if I fiddle somewhat with the connector going into the laptop, the connection is lost and everything freezes. Removing the Thunderbolt cable completely gives me control over the PC again, but the vMix i still frozen (and the drivers are gone). Power down and restart is needed.

I have had similar issues with our Asus G750s (Thunderbolt 2), but not that bad. That is, the G750 is less sensitive to fiddling. It seems also that the issue is on the laptop side, not on the PCIe expansion box end.

Have anyone else tried to fiddle with their Thunderbolt connectors?

What is stated in the article is true of any type of cable whether audio, video or data. You get what you pay for. Buying cheap cables may not be a good idea for your critical pieces of gear.

I think it's less the cable and more the USB-C connector. Perhaps on the female side in the Asus laptop. Will check next week with another PC.
