It has been a while ago but at the 16th of April this year the final of the Dutch Korfball League took place in a packed venue called The Ziggo Dome (12.500 spectators) in Amsterdam. Not only the final was played on that day but from 14:00 CET on also three other matches were scheduled.
Korfball is a Dutch invented team sport, played now in over 50 countries worldwide, where male and female players compete in the same team. 4 Male and 4 female players into 2 separate parts of the Korfball field (20 by 20 meters – offence and defense zone). Male can only defense male and female can only defense female. A goal is made when the ball has been shot through the korf at a height of 3,5 meters.
Preparations for that day started weeks before that. 8 of the 10 Korfball League clubs, all having their own Video Crews, streams their matches at their YouTube channel and a team from about 20 persons was formated to broadcast all of those mentioned four matches on the International Korfball Federations (IKF.org) YouTube channel.
The idea was to have a live studio with special guests before, at half time breaks and between matches, reports from outside Ziggo Dome (where promotion of the sport took place), Dutch and English commentary during the matches, a mixed zone with live interviews with players and coaches, 2 LED walls in Ziggo Dome, live statistics, live score tweets on twitter, scoreboard and shot clock in titles, instant replay at scores, a NAS for quick storage the recordings and the matches covered with a total of 7 camera’s.
Every pass, shot, defense – offence change, fault, time-out and score is tagged during the match. A special program has been developed, the vMix adapter, to create live statistics and show them in vMix. In the scoreboard and shot clock, players in offence have 25 seconds time to hit the korf, has a raspberry Pi build in that publish a webservice that vMix reads every 50 milli seconds through an XAML. Every score is tweeted automatically at the configured twitter account.
At Friday the 15th 15:00 the crew came together to test the 4 vMix 16 instances needed to do the job described above. A network drawing was prepared and all of the pc’s needed where configured with dedicated IP-addresses and ZABBIX to monitor all the equipment. At 23:00 everything was configured correctly and was running smoothly.

The next day we started at 06:00 to install everything at Ziggo Dome. At 12:30 everything was working and at 13:30 our live coverage started. Our marathon broadcast began with at the highest 4.500 live concurrent viewers at the IKF YouTube Channel and about 200.000 at National TV. In the weeks after the stream was watched over 20.000 times (not including the separate video’s we uploaded).
