So it has 5 channels.

So does that mean -

If I have 4 cameras and a video playing - then I can't have anything else on that channel (other than the overlays)

Or am I looking at this the wrong way?

I am not sure I understand the question, you might be looking at it wrong or possibly limiting your options at face value.
Are you referring to the "Overlay" channels in "MultiView"?
There are certain limitations within the "MultiView" feature, but with some creative planning, you can actually achieve some pretty amazing things (i.e. MultiView of a MultiView, but this can only be done up to two levels, overlays do not translate to 3 levels).

Sadly - that does not.

As I have been using the program for only 2-3 days now - and seem to be encountering several hurdles.

While everyone says read the manual - I find the manual severely limiting for someone without a video production background.

Let's use the MERGE TRANSITION explanation in vmix for example.

This literally makes no sense to me.

I find myself struggling - - I Want to love this program.. and I consider myself relatively intelligent. But my only video production knowledge is w xsplit - which is extremely simplistic... and I know I have grown out of it.

I am actually trying to find someone in NYC - to come and train me.. but that doesn't seem to exist either.

I completely understand, it can be rather overwhelming, especially if what you want to accomplish seemingly appears to be relatively simple.

First of all thank you for the reply.

OK -

I thought I had figured out my audio situation - but someone from vMix replied to me this morning and said it can't be done that way.

My setup currently

4 USB cameras
1 HDMI camera
2 HDMI tablets
6 microphones
1 audio source cable.
1 windows 10 cpu w 16 gigs of ram 4tb of SD storage. w a high end graphics card.

I currently put all mics into the mixer - and the mixer goes LINE IN to the computer.
4 cameras are in via USB
3 HDMI sources are in via an HDMI card

my computer audio out feeds speakers and headphones to all the hosts and producer.

the computer is set to RECORD WHAT U HEAR - and playback via speakers.


This set up works... it has limitations... but it works.

I did a similar thing w vMix - I added a audio channel for record what you hear to A - but then I stopped monitoring the master (or something like that) and now I can record without the delay - but vMix is telling me - that this may lead to out of sync a/v.

So I am trying to understand - how to set up the audio.

That's step one.

I have 4 other issues - but that's the first major hurdle.

I have a mackie mixer w all the needed ports - and return audio feeds.. but I just don't know how to use it. (MACKIE DFX-12)

I think this is the crux of it all.
How is this being accomplished without a delay?

AFAIK, this is not something that is "easily" achieved with any set-up.

My inclination would be to feed that audio back to talent and producers directly from the external audio mixer and not the computer audio out.

I found a soundblaster card - that has a RECORD WHAT YOU HEAR option -


These seem to have no delay -


I also Make sure the playback is via the soundblaster - not the motherboard audio - and there is no delay.

I have been doing this - since I started doing audio from my computer (I host a nationally syndicated rock radio show - on about 50 terrestrial radio stations as my main job)

The issue w feeding the audio to the hosts/producer via the mixer - is that I don't currently have audio from computer into the mixer.

Then I also need to figure out how to send it back without delay.

that's the issue..

I get lost trying to figure that out -

And the situation is - once I start pulling cables -- then the xsplit setup won't work - - and I have shows taping in my studio every day.

I was hoping to at least get it working in some capacity this weekend- and had no idea I would be so lost.

As I considered myself pretty knowledgeable on xsplit - so I didn't think this would be such a giant leap away from that.

Maybe we can start with my other issues and save audio for last??

For instance - one thing that I need to figure out is how to trigger an intro. on xsplit - I have audio intro, then video w/o audio - I then have the video fade to transparent at a certain point (it's a setting in xsplit) but the audio still continues.... when the video fades to transparent - you can then see the host camera w lower third title behind that video... and they start talking.

How would I achieve something like this in vMix?

This should not be too difficult to achieve, and there are probably several different ways to do it. Choosing the most appropriate method will depend to some extent on the nature of your INPUTS.
Just so we are on the same page, do you have a link to a previous show that will clearly illustrate exactly the "Intro" you want?
One of the issues is the background track, does it fade out on it's own or is that something that needs to be "programmed"?
Typically, by default, vMix is set-up for audio to follow video (meaning the audio of a particular INPUT goes ON and OFF air as the INPUT does), so for it to continue in the background, it has to be properly set-up for that (again, a couple of different ways to do that, but I digress).

As a point of reference, I believe I have achieved an "automated" opening sequence similar to what you describe (Black->music->video->music fade down to 60% after 15 seconds while fade transition to camera 1->fade in lower third->slowly music fade out->fade out lower third->fade to camera 2) with about 17 Triggers and considerable trial and error set-up time.
As stated earlier, it's probably not the only way to do it or even the best, but it does work, it just takes some planning and logistics to set it up properly, which might not be as straight forward as maybe it is in X-Split (I don't know) and certainly not something I am overly fond of unless absolutely necessary, automation that is, but it is possible to execute with vMix.

That's a bit nutty... I can't imagine having to do that for every element we play on the show. (we have features that all incorporate the idea of video w music leading into a host talking over the end of that music). And times that by the 10 shows on the network.

That could be a deal breaker unless there's a better way unfortunately.

So - I just heard back from someone at vMix

Apparently - and you may know this already -

But if you untick automatically mix - and automatically pause the video - when you transition to a camera - the music will still play. I already have the audio slowly fading in the mix of the video - so this solution works for me... and makes my life A LOT easier.

So score one for vMix!
