Dear vMix and all,

My boss was having trouble streaming with a laptop, so he grabbed his more powerful machine, installed vMix, and things went fine… until he realized that his default recording mode was AVI and he had a 37GB file to email me. He normally records in WMV.

He uses satellite broadband - we don’t want to try to FTP that file unless we have to.

Even worse, he cannot play the file in the latest VLC - he gets a black screen and only the sound comes through.

I’d like for him to be able to:
1. Recover the video - no black screen.
2. Shrink the file to a mere 3-4 GB.

I know how to do #2, if #1 is possible. But I’m not sure of the implications of the black screen for the video recording. I think we can rip the sound, but I don’t know what to do about that black screen. Can the video be saved too?

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install vMix and record and stream (probably he was streaming a desktop program or Powerpoint).
2. Inspect the recording.

OS is probably Win10 on a laptop using the built in graphics card. I don’t know the laptop vendor or model number, sorry. If you need that, I will ask, but that will take a while.

I’ve searched the forums and FAQ with no luck, so am asking here. Thanks to all.

Best wishes,
Brett

For whatever it is worth, I cannot reproduce the problem using Win7.
Thanks,
Brett

Has your boss tried to play the file in another player other than VLC?

You can playback an AVI file using vMix to see if there is video + audio. Add Input, Video.
