Was looking at the price of comms gear and tally lights and wondering how I could do it for less...

Wouldn't it be technically possible to use a mobile phone connect via wifi to the vmix tally wabpage and use that as tally light?

I could then use a 99c Android app called Wifi Talkie to do high quality wireless group comms via bluetooth or wired phone headsets.

It'd then be trivial to use an iFrame in the browser to get a live video feed next to the tally light webpage.

I think I'll give this a try in the next few weeks.

Would this really work? I can't see why not?

Yes, that would work. I use a combination of iPads, iPhones and a program called "Mumble" installed on my Production PC (and an APP on each device i want to talk to) on my WAN for communication. It works really well and the only cost is the devices.

Great. This option should be somewhere on the website... it's quite a valuable feature...

Do you mount your devices on the camera hotshoe? or handle? What's a good way?

You could use a hot shoe mount of some kind, my setup is mounted to my camera platform. My camera crew films from a stand mounted to a cage wall. So I have 2 screens mounted to the top of the cage. My other Tally light shows when my Commentary microphones are active and that is an iPad sitting on a desk.

So many ways to go about it.

Save ur 99c and download the zello app.
Vers. for iOS , android, phone, tablet, win PC Linux pc almost everything.

You can create talk groups with password access and switch the groups on or off at choice within the device to monitor or chat where/ when needed.

Great for comms. Use it all the time, even outside of production.

Re mounting..

we use these.. http://thumbs3.ebaystati...K9UpvJdS8dG4Eu1CQzkA.jpg

with hotshoe adptrs..

Also liking the idea of a webpage serving program output.
Now... how to get NDI displayed in an iframe ??

Not crazy at all...

We use the following setup on our 6 camera production at Church. We run a group google hangouts call across all 6 phones, and open the web browser to the tally page. Works amazingly!

we use that as well for our sports production. Small Android-Phones as Tally lights and the Zello-App for communication.

The only thing missing is an NDI-Monitor for a mobile device. You could then give the personell the opportunity to listen to the commentators. Only the Audio-Feed (without Video) could easily be handled over Wifi.

Create a 2nd group in zello fed with program out / comentary audio to distribute to those that need it.
You can monitor multiple groups in zello at any one time. Balance volume levels between groups as needed, by clicking profile icon (looks like two heads) balance levels between each group or individual group members)
Also you can set moderation so those monitoring 'commentary audio' group are listen only.

Is Zello a PTT only or can you set up a party line?

With an adjustable threshold level.

Yes it is, I havnt seen the vox function on the mobile app. I use zello with the PC, using vox and a headset to talk to camera ops. They then PTT on their mobiles when / if they need respond... But it's mostly for me calling shots, so works out fine for us :-)

Hey everybody!

I know it's been a while. Just wondering if these apps use an internet connection or can they be set to use the server you're on for vMix so it runs similar to how the tally lights work.
If you're doing a long stream in a remote location it could cost a bit to have the coms apps uploading and downloading the whole time (at least in Australia where the prices are quite high).

Cheers.

vmix has build in tally over wifi.

just look at the possibilies the wireless option in settings offer. it will show the camera live or not on the phone or ipad or laptop. better, the camera operator ca n see if his cam is live, on preset or not.

you can badically contol vmix through woreless, including badoc tally.

if you need a simple tally it would work also for the anker or presenter if they can see the phone...

Hi everyone,

I was curious to read through this topic and it kind of comfirms that it's certainly possible to do a low cost tally/intercom system. However, I would like to use good quality headsets with this, for example the Beyerdynamic DT109's. That way if I do get a "real" intercom some day, I can keep using the headsets. So does anyone know if you can connect those to an iOS device for use with mumble/zello? If not, what kind of headset do you guys use?

When I was in France I picked up a 99 euro 8" tablet complete with Windows 10, it was at an E.leclerc store. Maybe it's possible to find something like this in your region. Install your VOIP software and the NDI monitor on it and then you have it! Works great for me. Now to go back to France to buy more of them! (they are probably also on eBay)

Kind regards,

Davey.
