It would be very useful to be able to label each audio input like you can with other types of inputs. Then if you mouse over the custom title, it shows the source you selected for the audio input.without having to go into settings.

This is currently available. Just rename the Input that is associated with the Audio Input.
For example: If I add an Audio Input (the main output from my mixer), I can rename it "Main Mix from Mixer" by clicking the gear icon (Settings) on that Input and typing a new title in the Name field. That title will also appear on the top of the Input in the vMix Audio Mixer.
The inputs in the Audio Mixer are not numbered like the general Inputs are, so you have to look for the title.
