Now that we have the ability to use MIDI faders to control vMix 16 Preview, the question has come up as to
how to best translate those fader levels to audio levels.

The method vMix currently uses is linear, which means the audio amplitude is 50% (-6dB) at the half way point.
While this allows accurate audio adjustments, it doesn't match up that well with human hearing and it's also a bit different to how
faders work on most audio mixing consoles which all have their own slightly different ways of working. Take the following two examples
from Behringer and Presonus:

As you can see the distances between each dB level are different depending on the manufacturer and sometimes even the model,
as Behringers analog consoles are slightly different to the X32 faders, for example.

So my questions are:

* Should vMix switch the fader operation to dB rather than linear?
* If so, should it match a particular mixer, or go with something consistent like evenly spaced 0 to -100db?
* Should there be multiple options available in settings, such as Linear, dB and maybe some specific mixers to emulate?
Obviously it is hard to emulate exactly how certain mixers work, but I think I could get it close.

Thanks,

Martin

You could add in preferences the choice between linear and an user-defined scale:

fader 0%= x dB
fader 20%= x dB
fader 30%= x dB
etc.

(maybe more steps)

The steps between the defined points are interpolated.
The user then can define what ever he likes.

Hello Martin,

Yet these controls should certainly be Logarithmic. (Audio Taper as we old guys call them).

Potentiometers (Faders) come in 2 flavors and we always use an audio taper pot when controlling volume to match human hearing. Linear taper for most anything else.

I used to build audio consoles and gear in college.

should get started test 16 today with an APC 40 :-)

I've just posted an update to vMix 16 Preview that sets the faders to logarithmic by default.

I've used an approximate scale that is close to most audio console faders, so let me know if it works as you would expect.
