What would be the most efficient construct to get the GUID of the active element returned in the XML, in vb.net?

Hoping to avoid frequent for/next loop evaluation through XML, since script would be activated every time the active source is changed.

retrieve the input number of the active input then retrieve with one xpath the "key" of the input matching that number directly
