Hi there,
My name is Mitchell, long time vMix user. A colleague and I were recently discussing vMix Replay and how it compares to systems like the NewTek 3Play and the Ross Mira+. We have used both of those systems extensively, and there is one major feature they offer that vMix Replay does not: media import directly into Replay Events.
I know this feature has been requested before. I am adding my voice because I genuinely believe it deserves additional thought and consideration. This is not an edge-case workflow. It is something replay operators encounter constantly in real productions.
We understand why this may have been overlooked. vMix already allows media playback as standard inputs, so on the surface it may seem unnecessary inside Replay. The real issue comes down to one thing: continuity.
For many productions, vMix Replay becomes its own dedicated machine. We often take two outputs straight from the Replay controller and operate it as a self-contained system. This is where the lack of media import becomes a real workflow problem.
Real world examples:
• If we have B-roll or beauty shots from a non-connected camera (mirrorless, drone, etc.), we currently have to play the file back inside vMix, re-record it, and then capture that recording into Replay. This is time consuming and inefficient.
• If we want to come back from break on a drone shot and then immediately transition into halftime highlights, we cannot do that within Replay. We have to run the clip separately, which breaks the flow of a proper replay package.
• Post-game melts and highlight packages often combine replay angles with pre-recorded footage. Competing replay systems allow this seamlessly. vMix Replay cannot do it without workarounds.
This is not a small feature. Most dedicated replay systems, including 3Play and Mira+, already support importing external media directly into their replay timelines or clip lists. It is a standard expectation in modern broadcast replay workflows.
Because I have seen this requested a few times over the years, I think it would be helpful for the community to know whether this is something that might be considered in the future or if it is outside the intended scope of vMix Replay. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Adding the ability to import media files into the Replay Event list, even with basic limitations, would significantly improve vMix Replay's real-world usability and bring it closer to the industry-standard systems it competes with.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this. I am more than willing to provide workflow diagrams, examples, or any additional details if needed.
Mitchell
