I'm moving our Journalsim production system here at the University from Tricaster 2 Elite to vMix - The whole system runs completely using NDI I/O for video and Dante I/O for audio. Both NDI and Dante are on thier own sepaerate VLAN.

History:

Adding Dante Virtual Sound Card to the Tricaster was straight forward - I had to assign two dante channels per TC2 device or inputs - that gave me 4 x DDRs (2 channels), 4 x LiveU (2 channels) That looks very simple on the dante controller and simple to assign those outputs into the SQ5 Dante i/o. The output of the SQ5 is converted from Dante to analogue L&R through a Glensound box going back into the Tricaster as the main mix.

Other external inputs such as the 4 x radio mics from the Studio are going over the dante network into the SQ5.

Now:

So my task is to configure the outputs of the vMix 6 x playlist (as variable pairs for the Cuez Automation) 2 x LiveU outputs for mixing and then return them back to the vMix to embed into the final video output.

The vMix has a bus structure.... unlike the Tricaster which just outputs the audio for each device.

My confusion is it appears I have to assign everything through individual busses(?) to the dante streams as opposed to just assigning device outputs directly to dante streams.

Is this how ir works with vMix - you have to go via the buss assignment.

Yes. By default, everything is routed to the master output. If you want to use additional outputs, you have to route the signals

Here is a short guide to error reduction

You have to Route the vmix outputs to Dante. See https://www.vmix.com/help28/AudioOutputs.html
Vmix can handle only 8 Stereo outs (or 16 mono, using the Matrix to Route L/R). See cannel Matrix https://www.vmix.com/help28/AudioSettings.html

If you want to integrate Dante inputs into vmix you must first add the input
https://www.vmix.com/help28/AudioInput.html

To get audio out from vmix you have to do:
1 Enable Audio on Input (the „Audio“ Button have to be Green https://www.vmix.com/help28/InputSettings.html
2. Click the M, A or B buttons at the AudioMixer underneath each input to configure each independent each mix. https://www.vmix.com/help28/Mixer.html
3. Route the Signal in Audio Bus Manager https://www.vmix.com/help28/AudioBusManager.html
4 Check if the Speaker Button is on (speaker icon have to be Green) in Inputs and Outputs https://www.vmix.com/help28/Mixer.html
5 Check if Volume is on (Check if the Fader is up and the Audio Meters lighting) https://www.vmix.com/help28/AudioMeters.html

Sorry, can't upload screenshots. Hope you can manage with the links.

Big Thank you for this - I'll need to rationalise my sources out of vMix and only route the play lists and feeds that will need fader and EQ control, such as SOT, OOVs and LiveU feeds. The bumpers, titles and stings I can route directly to the master output as the levels are fixed. I can see the logic of including buss routing in vMix - but it would also be useful to have direct outs.

Direct outs or generally more outputs than just the 8 stereo would be very helpful. You can submit a feature request.
