I’m using vMix 26.0.0.45. Does anyone know how to retrieve the name of the currently active source via the API or something similar?

Yes.
We also know how to use Google. Some people even know how to prompt ChatGPT for vMix scripting solutions.

The answer you are looking for can be found in the Scripting For Dummies thread but more precisely it's really script to read the vMix Status XML page http://127.0.0.1:8088/api which you can bring up on the PC running vMIX. Many of the scripts in that thread read that XML from vMix and should provide examples of how to find all manner of things you might want to know.

So, I can retrieve XML at http://127.0.0.1:8088/api. It's so simple that it didn't occur to me in reverse. There's a Japanese saying, "灯台下暗し" (literal translation: "Dark under the lamppost"), and it's exactly like that.
