We are a chuch in Pretoria South Africa. We  have the latest version of vMix. We connect three cameras through NDI (Cam 1 Panasonic MDH3 with Birddog Flex4K), Cam 2 Birddog p100, Cam 3 Birddog p100). We also control those with the Skaarhoj Airfly for vMix, and the Skaarhoj Camera controller with joystick. We also have two NDI inputs through vMix Desktop Capture from another computer on the network, through which we overlay lyrics onto the video. We livestream To Facebook and YouTube.

In the church we have a couple of projectors running on HDMI over Cat6 through an Hdmi splitter connected to the GPU. We also have a Behringer XR18 desk on the stage. We bring an XLR stereo audio feed from the desk to the Behringer UMC 202hd, and then from the output back to the XR18 a balanced jack that goes through a DI to XLR and then down to the stage to the XR18. The Behringer interface is connected to the PC with a specialist Audio USB 2 cable, which we bought to try and make the connection more stable.

The problem is that the sound feed from the audio interface is unstable in vmix. The sound quality is very good when it works and during some services it has no problems. Today during church the livestream audio dropped twice. I told the guy on tech today to right click on the audio block and press reset, and the sound was immediately back, but I need it to be reliable and stable. It keeps on dropping intermittently after much troubleshooting. I can’t find any forum or video on this happening to the Behringer Audio Interface. I am prepared to buy another device, but obviously with our weak currency, I don’t want to do it if it isn’t absolutely necessary.

Is there any issue with vMix and audio interfaces that can cause this problem? Do you have any answer? (I have set the Audio gap handling setting in vmix to resampling.)

At first we had no problems but in the last three months the audio intermittently drops. It is causing great consternation, not being able to provide reliable audio on the church livestream. Please help!

I also want to as whether I can just use NDI audio direct instead? What devices do I need to be able to send the Audio signal from the desk to the vmix Computer through NDI?

do you have any other audio devices being used in vMIx besides the Behringer 202 ? for example are you using the computers onboard audio (or some other audio interface) for a headphone output or another buss output ?

No other audio sources or devices on the computer.

when you say no other devices... most computers have onboard audio on the motherboard so a device is probably there but have you done anything specific to remove it or are you just not plugging anything in ? if there is onboard audio i would try to disable it in device manager that way its not available at all in vMix..

aside from that i would try process of elimination.. setup a basic vMix project with few inputs and keep adding stuff slowly to see if/when the problems start.. try different USB ports for the behringer and cables, unplug all other USB devices etc.. if it keeps happening no matter how minimal the combination, i would then try to borrow a different audio interface to see if that helps, or otherwise remove the behringer and turn motherboard audio on by itself.. in order to know what needs changing you first need to to isolate the cause of the problem..

Windows makes you choose. So its either the built-in sound, with its analogue ports at the back, or the usb connection attached to the audio interface. Can't run the two together. Nothing is plugged in at the back, or front panel, and windows forces you to abandon that system when you use a usb interface.

I have extensively tested the audio interface, I've bought different cables. I've tested different usb ports. The audio interface is stable as far as I can tell. I've tested it for multiple hours.

vMix occasionally drops the audio. Nothing else drops the audio, only vMix. I thought it might be some setting on vMix or maybe a driver issue.

what you are selecting in windows is just which device to hear audio from, it doesnt mean another device (such an onboard audio) isnt present.. you would need to disable it in device manager for it to be fully removed..

what im referring to is related to something you said in your reply.. "Nothing else drops the audio, only vMix." these sorts of problems may be a result of vMix allowing multiple audio devices to be used together that have no common clock source between them..

you might notice other audio software such as DAWs only allow one audio device to be used at anytime ? also pro audio gear has sync connectors like wordclock on them.. why is that ? its to prevent clocking issues when multiple digital devices need to be used together.. vMIx seems to ignore all this though and lets you select multiple audio devices (even entry level stuff).. i would expect that to cause issues in some capacity its just where/when/how they manifest..

ultimately im not sure if this is the cause of your problem but what you are describing is the symptoms i would expect if it was.. the way to avoid it as a potential issue is use one audio device.. that doesnt just mean selecting behringer as the primary driver in windows.. other audio devices need to be disabled or at least make sure they arent selected in vMix preferences..

if you are sure this isnt the cause then i dont have any other suggestions other than process of elimination tests like i mentioned in the previous post..

Thank you, I understand more clearly what you are saying. I have gone to device manager and disabled all other devices apart from the audio interface (on the playback side and on the recording side).

I sincerely hope this solves the problem.

I will test it and give feedback. Thanks.

How far is the XR18 from the computer?

Right now you are using two outputs on your XR-18 which already converted the sound to digital so it then converts that digital back to analog for those ports, then you have two cables running fron the XR-18 to your Behringer UMC 202hd which then converts that analog back to digital which it then feeds to computer via a USB connection.

Did you know that just running a USB cable from the XR-19 to the computer directly will free up two output ports on the XR18 and eliminate the Behringer UMC 202hd entirely as well as free up a couple of audio cables that are surely needed elsewhere?

There are ASIO drivers for the XR-18, you can eliminate the extra conversions, reduce the lag for the audio and have a more reliable connections as well as not need an extra device in the system.

Not only that but you can also then feed audio from vMix to the XR-18 using one of the audio buses as the connection to the XR-18 is simultaneously bidirectional as long as you select an ASIO configuration that allows you at least four channels (L and R for both directions). Routing is accomplished in the XR-18: https://www.sweetwater.c...g-and-io-settings-guide/

The XR18 needs about 40m of usb cable to connect directy, which is too far for a direct connection. We have explored that option with two 20m usb cables with built in signal boosters. It worked for a short while and then gave a lot of problems.

I didn't know about the asio drivers for the XR18. We have used all the other functions on the XR18 that you described. It would've been ideal if there wasn't such a long distance involved.

In time we will move the XR18 to the church hall, and get a new system for the main auditorium. I'm thinking Behringer X32 rack of maybe a full Midas desk with stagebox. We'll see, but right now this one needs to work.

Just to get back to my second question. Does anyone perhaps have any experience with NDI direct audio? If I put a desktop computer next to the XR18 desk, and connect it with a usb cable, it stays digital. If I can make that signal NDI, and make it available on the network from there, I'll have an NDI audio input and i won't even need the Audio interface. Does anyone know how it works? I saw something in that direction on the NDI tools website. It's early morning now in South Africa, I think I'll try to find out more about that today.

I still want to gear about NDI direct audio, but I've tested it now for two hours with all the bells and whistles, streaming to both FB and YT, and all is stable for now. Let's hope the problem is solved. Thanks for your help.

is it now working with the Behringer 202 ? or do you have it working with NDI audio ?

Just like you do to extend the HDMI connections because cables that long aren't very good, there are Cat 5 solutions you can use to extend the USB line which as you noted isn't designed to go great distances.

We bought an X32 first but when it broke we replaced it with an M32, the latter comes with a ten year warranty which the X32 lacks. Configuration transferred across very easily. And yes, I used a UMC202HD to connect to the X32 at first until I figured out that the USB cable worked vastly better. We also have an XR18 Air we use as our portable system because we sometime have services elsewhere, when that X32 finally gets fixed we'll probably put it to work somehow too.
