Alpha Mask effect vs. Luminance key - What can I do with one that I can't do with the other?

It seems to me that the new Alpha Mask effect doesn't do anything for me that a luminance key can't do.
What am I missing?
I'd really like to be able to do a "traveling matte" transition with my own video with an alpha channel or a grey-scale mask.

Exactly my thought, that will be very awesome. stinger or transition with an alpha matte would be a great add, i think this was added in OBS awhile back
