Hi Everyone,

Our church recently purchased a PTZ camera to try out. We currently have a vMix HD licence and looking for a controller. For those using it, are the shortcuts and ptz control in 4k/pro worth the upgrade, or would a dedicated hardware controller offer the best experience? I would be using presets 80% of the time.

My biggest concern is the reliability and performance of manual joystick control. I have only used the ptz optics free control software so far and noticed delays and stutters in control and movement when using keyboard and Xbox controllers. Does vmix have the same issues?

Also, is there any (noticable) lag in controlling cameras over IP vs RS232 or 485?

Thanks
M

I have used PTZ optics cameras with vMix and didn't have any issues with stuttering or delays (not did I with their program).

The biggest problem you'll have with a lot of cameras is that the VISCA protocol only has 8 movement speeds so it's impossible to get really nice buttery smooth movement with anything that uses VISCA.

Panasonic's cameras are considered among the best and have their own proprietary protocol when used with their hardware joystick. You can make super nice smooth movement with it.

If you're really going to be doing just presets and not moving the camera while live then you'll be fine with a VISCA camera and vMix.

If you use vMix to control them you can also integrate your positions into any scripting / automation you use. If you're a one-man show I'd also recommend this.

Hi paco3346,

The stuttering I had with the PTZ optics software seemed like it wasn't sending the command all the time or there was a delay between when I pressed the key or the xbox controller to when it actually responded, which caught me off guard. Also there doesn't seem to be variable speed control with it. I assume vMix has variable speed with their analog controls, but I don't know. I haven't really looked at it for awhile since I never had a need. Now I'm watching and reading all I can find and trying to catch up.

Just not really sure what would give the best experience, either a hardware controller or upgrade from HD to 4k. Other than PTZ control, HD does more than what we need and the upgrade is the price of some controllers we have been looking at.

Thanks
