I have been a long time Wirecast user for our podcast. There are a few things about it I just don't like, so last night I downloaded the trial version of vMix. So far, I am very impressed, but there are a few things keeping me from purchasing the product that I hope this forum can help me with:

1. How do I delete an input? I created an input with a single image before I realized the next option down was a slide show (something I have been begging Wirecast to do since version 3).

2. I have only done some test recordings, no streaming yet, and the CPU usage is VERY high. With Wirecast, I can stream and record and still keep the CPU under 60% (total usage). My broadcast machine is a Core i7 3770k OC to 4.2Ghz running Windows 7. I am using the MP4 recording option with "Use Hardware Encoder" checked, but the total CPU usage is still 85%+. My video card is an AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series. I also have an AverMedia C985 card in the machine if that helps. Of course my concern is if I am already maxing out the CPU with just the local recording, then there is no way I could also stream the video.

Thanks for the help!

Mike

Mike,

1. Select "Close on the input, That will remove it.

2. You should have plenty of CPU horsepower with that set-up. What other processes or s/w are running at the same time?

What version of vMix did you download? 13? 14? Just curious.

Well that was super simple, can't believe I missed how to remove the input. Thanks!

I am running vMix 13 and the only other processes I had running on the system was the Chrome browser with several tabs open. Is there any way for vMix to use the AverMedia C985 to handle the encoding?

Not for vMix. Just record or stream with AverMedia software (RECentral), using vMix as a source.

Regarding your high CPU usage, I forgot to ask... what resolution are you using?

MP4 is very CPU intensive. This has been improved quite a bit in Windows 8, so I would suggest upgrading if possible, otherwise
I would suggest recording to MPEG-2 instead.

MP4 impact on the CPU has been improved in Windows 8 over Windows 7? Is the difference noticable?

Hi Martin,

i bump this topic because of the "use hardware encoder" option in MP4 local recording.
Can you make a statement about it because the requirements are not really clear. Nothing in the documentation, nothing in the forum.
I thought it uses Quick Sync, but my i7 3770K is Quick Sync compatible (works well with OBS and Action! Capture) and still uses up to 80% CPU in vMix.

BTW why can't we use FFmpeg for local enconding if we can't have hardware acceleration ? it seems to use far less CPU.

Thanks.

I am putting this here instead of starting a new thread. I have ordered a Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle 2. Has anyone used these with good success? I was thinking I could record to this and keep from affecting performance of the vMix. I only ordered one. I wanted to use this to record the vMix ouput. Any thoughts or insight will be appreciated.

Hi,
I use the original shuttle and it works great for me. In addition to taking the recording load off the vMix System, it functions as a 'converter', as it has both SDI and HDMI ins and outs. It records ProRes format at very high quality. My workflow is output from vMix -> input of shuttle -> input of Encoder (Teradek or Vidiu).
