The connection between the XR18 is in USB like a sound card external?

For ear monitor of talent and control room, i can use the AUX outputs of the XR18 , and activ/key on the Akai APC mini for example to talk to the talent isnt?

I see this is an older thread, but I wanted to suggest my solution.

We're using a Tascam 16x08 as our audio interface. This gives us 16 inputs and 8 outputs. We also have a IMG Stage Line 24.4190 Headphone amplifier. 4 of the 6 channels on the headphone amplifier are connected into the Tascam outputs so we can create mix minus for host, guests, etc. We also create a control room mix that our operators use which has the show audio plus director's voice. (this has saved us from purchasing comms for the time being)
