Do virtual inputs count as total inputs in Basic HD.
I would like to create several differently cropped frames from one camera ...

YES!
Every Input in vMix counts as an Input, so in vMix Basic HD, you will only be able to create up to 3 Virtual Copies from a single Camera Input.

If you need more inputs you can upgrade your license. It isn't that expensive.
