I am in the market for a PCI capture card. I have 3 cameras and may add a fourth one some time down the line.
I am looking at Blackmagic Decklink Quad HDMI and Magewell Quad HDMI. The Decklink is about $300 less that the Magewell. Anybody have any
experience with these two, and does the Decklink work well? It would be helpful if I could save the extra cost.

There are also a few others that I know of, but assume they all work the same, like the one from AJA.

I have read that the Blackmagic card is very particular and is difficult to make it work correctly, while the Magewell will work no matter what is connected to it. Anybody experience these?

BMD cards work pretty well but their drivers can be picky sometimes... Like everything at BMD, it's "almost" perfect but there is always a problem or a limitation. I own several BMD cards and never had a real critical issue anyway.
I believe Magewell offers more and is maybe a little better
