Hey y'all!

I TD-ed a really cool livestream last night with Shilelagh Law where 4 out of 5 of the band were in our studio space in NYC but the lead singer and guitar player couldn't be in the room due to travel restrictions from Covid-19. So, we sent a vMix machine out to the lead singer with a webcam and Dante audio interfaces. First, we created an SRT feed from him to the main studio space so we had his video and audio, then used Dante to route his audio into our Yamaha QL-1 so he showed up to be mixed alongside all other instruments. Second, we used Dante again to send his mixed monitor feed back to the studios vMix machine, and then we created another SRT feed going back to him carrying his monitor mix along with a static wide shot of the his bandmates. Nothing too special yet but the wonderful part of it was we managed to get the latency low enough that all band members could stay in time with each other and play live comfortably like they were on the same stage. Highlight video below! In additon to the SRT we also used vMix for the ususal cutting of all cameras, GFX, feeding external LED walls, etc.

Video is the first one on this page:

Shameless plug over, have a good one!

so basically, sound was going trough Dante and Video trough VMIX ? or did Dante was connecting to local VMIX and sound sent into the VMIX SRT ?
this was to get no lag in sound or Dante offered better sound quality ?
did you get then a lag between video and sound ?

vMix SRT was carrying video and audio in both directions (New Hampshire to New York and New York to New Hampshire). We set up a Dante network in our studio in New York, and then a Dante Network in New Hampshire to route the guitarist's audio and his monitor feed remotely - I logged in to the remote vMix machine via teamviewer and then could route and organize his audio with Dante Controller/DVS/vMix. Went with Dante for sound quality, easier set up for the guitarist who wasn't a tech, and lower latency (2ms on either end). Saves shipping 10 pounds of XLR cable too :)

nice setup. I never worked with Dante equipement. will try to find some to play with...
So Vmix is able to see Dante network audio stream directly or you used one of the dante to usb or analog converter ?
if i can avoid to install additional software for audio in the vmix pc, it would be great.
i do not mind to add additional hardware, i feel more confident with hardware than with software. it is easier to debug

Audinate makes XLR to Cat5 adapters which show up on the Dante Network as audio sources or outputs. For the vMix machine you're going to want to install "Dante Virtual Soundcard." vMix recognizes Dante Virtual Soundcard the same way it would a USB DAC (both as an Audio Input and a destination you can send an Audio Bus). The idea is to use software instead of hardware to minimize latency at every level. The vMix Machine and our Yamaha QL1 - which is a Dante Enabled mixer - can exchange audio back and forth over Cat5 and a gigabit network switch at 2ms latency rather than running XLR cable back and forth. Also, the audio coming in from our remote guest (guitarist in New Hampshire) was already digital as it was coming in over SRT, so good to keep it digital by keeping it in Dante Network world rather than turn it to analog and then back again. Dante Virtual Soundcard is like $25 USD and the XLR to Dante adapters are about $100. Thanks!
