Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 setup - vMix or Focusrite control panel to achieve four physical in/outs?

I have a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 and want to create four discrete audio inputs and four discrete audio outputs in vMix.

I’ve been digging around with both the Focusrite control software and vMix to see how to achieve this and am a bit flummoxed.

Do I have to use the Focusrite app to create the set up first or can it all be done within vMix?

In terms of physical connections, I need two mic inputs from the presenters, one mic for talkback, one output for headphones and two outputs to in ear monitors for each of the presenters.

Following is the result of the last 24 hours exploring the Scarlett with my staging client, at the other end of much to and fro-ing, trying out various combinations and such. It seems so stupidly obvious and yet not one tutorial or discussion or thread said this was the thing to do:

1 Install the drivers and control application for the Scarlett and do not touch anything. Leave it at the defaults.
2 Under Windows Settings: System: Sound, set the default input and output to the Scarlett
3 In vMix, under Settings: Audio Inputs set all the Inputs to Default Windows Playback Device and select 1+2, 3+4 or individual channels down the additional busses according to how you set up your physical connections on the Scarlett

That's it.

Well said.

Yeah I wouldn’t mess with the focusrite software only because if you change routing or something its not obvious until youopen the software again.

I would also add that you can change each bus output to reflect the physical outputs of the scarlett. That is to say; Bus A is output 1, bus B is output 2 etc. That way you can selectively send what you want where you want would be very flexible.

You 100% have to use the FocusRite software to make this happen, it controls the Scarlett.

You'll need to turn on all 4 input channels in the FR software, and you can also route certain audio to each output through there as well.

In vMix, use the ASIO on the audio input to be able to make an input for each audio channel. You can also choose where each bus is sent in the audio settings in the main settings panel.


most important thing is turning on all four channels in focusrite software!!

Is that real? You have to turn on the inputs?
There is no way to plug and play?

That seems like a design flaw. Of course it does force you to use their software. So maybe it's intentional.

My comments were more to say leave the focusrite in it's default state so that the routing is logical when controlling it in vmix. If you for some reason routed things in an unusual way. You may forget in the future and spend a lot of time chasing your tail. Not that it has happened to me...no...never.

change settings for one thing and forget to change them for another? nope can't relate, never happened to me either not once nooooppppeeee :)

Focusrite has 'snapshots' that can be saved and loaded though.

I know if I close the focusrite software, i can't use my Clarett 8pre with the computer. i'd unplug it now but it's in use
